Believe it or not, there was once a time when kitchen countertops needed only to be functional. Today, of course, the functionality factor continues to be important, however the look has become equally important. Kitchens are as much entertainment areas as they are a place for food preparation. Still, this doesn't mean one must sacrifice functionality in favor of aesthetics. Quite the contrary. There are a wide variety of looks that appeal to most anyone's taste that provide necessary functionality and desired appeal.

Of course the functional kitchen is a simple concept, but the addition of aesthetics need not be difficult. Simply upgrading the flooring or the lighting fixtures can make all the difference. The appliances chosen certainly add to any kitchen's appeal, however the countertops may very well be the most important upgrade of all. For both appeal and functionality, synthetic, marble, tile, and granite are each great choices.

Synthetic options are also a strong choice. They are visually appealing and can be designed to look like virtually any other surface, including stone. Care must be taken however, since hot items and improper cleaning materials can damage the surface. Still, for the money, many people choose this option.

Granite is on the higher end of kitchen upgrades. While it looks great in almost any setting, it is also easy to maintain and is far less prone to heat damage. Even though granite tile helps to ease the price when compared to granite slate, it is still one of the more expensive options. Many chose to spend the extra money though, since granite will typically last a lifetime.

Another relatively expensive option is marble. It is perhaps the best looking of all the countertop options and, like granite, can last a lifetime, however it is not immune to heat. Excessive heat can cause discoloration than cannot be repaired. The good news is that it is virtually impossible to scratch, crack, or break it.

Certainly more options are easily obtained, however these are the countertops that are usually the ones found in today's newer kitchens or those recently upgraded. Each option has a wide range of price points. These are typically determined by the amount of material and any unique installation requirements.

So there are a number of ways to create a real haven in the kitchen, and options abound, but nothing does more for the appeal of a kitchen than its countertops.
