Choosing a profession, career, or the educational program that you want to pursue in order to reach that end goal, is a difficult decision. It's not one to be taken lightly either, since it will affect the rest of your life. If you've been thinking about the field of engineering, you may not be convinced that it's a good fit. However, there are actually many great reasons to become an engineer, and by the time you finish taking a look at this quick guide, you'll likely be ready to get moving down that path for yourself.

Engineering offers a huge array of opportunities for interested individuals, and in fact, that's one of the leading reasons to choose the field. Engineers have dozens of different directions they could go in, in terms of the focus they want to have for their studies and the career that follows. The difference between these positions is huge too, as far apart as petroleum engineering to biomedical engineering or from aerospace engineering to civil engineering, and as mentioned, there are dozens of specialties to look at.

This is fantastic, because you don't have to do anything you don't want to. ...
... You can naturally choose which area is the best fit based on your predispositions, interests, skills, and simply what you want to do or which subfield has the best opportunities. Many people pigeonhole engineers as somebody repairing a city's infrastructure like roads and bridges, but there's far more choices than that.

Another one of the top reasons for choosing engineering degrees is that you can sort all of this out as you go. In fact, you can even choose multiple disciplines and study them in tandem in order to forge a unique path for yourself. Some specialties of engineering mesh fantastically together and will leave you in a position of strength in the job market. For example, think about the natural fits of specialties like health and safety and civil engineering, or biomedical and environmental engineering, or chemical and materials engineering.

Of course, one of the best reasons to consider engineering is that the field is expected to grow at a faster pace than many others over the next decade, according to the BLS. There are tons of job opportunities, from the government to the private sector, from multinational corporations to small startups, and more, and all of them offer unique, exciting and cutting-edge careers.

Not only that, but engineers are handsomely rewarded for their hard work. In fact, they are amongst the highest paid workers, and also enjoy some fantastic starting salaries as well. Engineering salaries will be different in each individual field from the next, but all engineers are well paid and enjoy great compensation.

Individuals who enter the competitive field of petroleum engineering bring home a median salary of nearly $110,000 for example. Mining engineers are at the low end of the pay scale for engineers and they still earn median salaries of $75,000. Computer hardware engineers earn $95,000, and generally, between $80k and $90k is typical for the majority of engineering subfields.

Clearly there are many different great reasons to choose an engineering degree, and to forge a career for yourself in one of many fields of engineering. The opportunities are limitless, the pay is great, the jobs are rewarding and exciting, and much more, all of which makes engineering very attractive to prospective students.
