Ucla Bruins Take Out Ohio State Buckeyes In 1976 Rose Bowl Game

The Rose Bowl is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious bowl games in NCAA Football. This is not a recent development as the Rose Bowl has featured some of the best teams in the nation year after year. During the 1970s the Rose Bowl featured many games involving the Ohio State Buckeyes.
In 1976 the Buckeyes were lined up to play against the UCLA Bruins. The Bruins were 8-2-1 entering the game and they were the underdogs by 15.5 points because they were undefeated on the season. They were not only undefeated coming into the game, but they were also the top ranked team in the nation in both the AP and Coaches polls. A win in this game would go a long way towards giving them the top ranking in the nation. However, UCLA was not going to go down easy.
UCLA was coached by Dick Vermeil. Many people know Vermeil from his time in the NFL as a head coach. The Buckeyes were coached by Woody Hayes. Interestingly enough, this would be the last time that Hayes would ever coach in the Rose Bowl. There were more than 105 thousand people in attendance at the Rose Bowl.
While UCLA was the heavy underdog, they ...
... would have the advantage of crowd support. The Rose Bowl is played in Pasadena, California. The Bruins are from Los Angeles and the game would attract a large following from their home crowd.
The first half was relatively low-scoring as Ohio State was the only team to crack the scoreboard. The Buckeyes managed to punch in a 42 yard field goal to go ahead 3-0. That was the only score of the first quarter and neither team managed to put any points on the board in the 2nd quarter. The first half would end with a score of 3-0.
The third quarter is when the game really started to open up. The UCLA Bruins came out firing in the 3rd quarter and managed to put a lot of points on the board. Brett White tied up the game by putting in a 33 yard field goal. That was only the first of 3 scores in the period for the Bruins as they managed to put 2 touchdowns on the board as John Sciarra hooked up with receiver Wally Henry twice for a 16 and a 67 yard score.
With the 3 scores in the 3rd quarter the Bruins were shocking the world by going up 16-3 entering the final period of play. The Buckeyes did their best to make a comeback in the fourth quarter. They managed to put up a score as Green threw a touchdown pass to
Stassini. Unfortunately the score would not be enough as the Bruins were not done scoring. Wendell Tyler ran the ball for a 54 yard touchdown, putting the Bruins ahead 23-10 and sealing the victory for the UCLA Bruins over the top-ranked Buckeyes.
John Sciarra was named MVP of the game after throwing two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter.
