Strike the balance
The concept of good is subjective. Some people feel that as long as you are providing the kids with their necessary needs like food, clothing and shelter that are already being a good parent. Some feel it is a more complex aspect of humanity. The fact is that there should be a balance. You cannot smother the child with worldly goods and say you are a successful father. There should be a balance with what you can offer in material needs as well as emotional needs and guidance. You can use the hierarchy of needs by Maslow as your guide to what basic components of a self actualized individual needs.

Offer security
In being a good parent, you have to make sure that the child is secure. Apart from a cozy home and safe environment, the child should be comfortable with how they express themselves to you. They should be able to talk to you whenever they have issues or when they are curious about things. Security about the family is when the parents and children are dealing with issues and problems. Parent-friend roles
Some parents think that being a good parent is making themselves to the level of their kids. They become their friends and they go with first name basis. They also develop a bond that is more of a friend than parent child relationship. As much as this is nice in a theory, first and foremost, the parent should be able to establish that there is a level of authority that the parent should keep. If you made your child too comfortable in treating you like their own age, it could be hard to change this habit when they grow older. You can still be a friend but there are boundaries that need to be established.

Being fair and consistent
When it comes to being a good parent, one should be fair when giving punishments. Power tripping can lead to big issues on the long run so you would not want to feel that you are being unfair to them. Be sure that you have reasonable punishments. Do not compare the siblings and when they do something good, at the very least, give them a compliment.

Give them a break
The last tip on being a good parent is to give your kids a break sometimes. Moderation is key. Do not make them feel like the home is a prison since you always impose rules that are too much even in military standards. Do not be too lax also. Strike a balance and live in moderation.
