LG were the phone manufacturer that were first to introduce a dual core smartphone to European and Asian markets and now they will also be the first company to bring 3D screen technology into the mobile phone world with their latest Optimus 3D smartphone. This 3D technology is not quite the same as the one you may be used to in the cinema as it operates on a different principle.

While the technology used in movie theatres provides a fuller 3D effect it requires the use of 3D glasses in order to be enjoyed. Thankfully, you will be glad to know that glasses are not necessary for the Optimus 3D. The phone runs on a technology known as a parallax barrier display that produces a 3D effect by partially blocking certain viewing angles so that the image seen by each eye is different. This disparity in each eyes image is what produces a parallax effect, or an illusion of 3 dimensionality.

There is one flaw with this system in that the effect can only be felt when the screen is viewed from certain angles meaning that if either your head or the phone are liable to move around much then the 3D effect will be sporadic at best ...
... and highly frustrating at worst. For short activities like games and short video clips this won't really be an issue but if you were interested in enjoying longer 3D movies on a smartphone then you may need to become accustomed to not fidgeting too much.

The 3D features are not just present in the gorgeous 4.3" LCD screen in use on the Optimus 3D as it also comes with the potential for creating 3D content too. The dual 5 megapixel cameras on board allow you to capture stereoscopic images as well as 720p 3D videos. The camera can also record 2D videos at a much higher 1080p video quality, and the Optimus 3D is one of the first phones to offer this level of video recording quality.

Along with 3D videos the Optimus 3D provides other entertainment value through standard video and music support, an FM radio and access to Android Market for many fantastic games and apps. The Optimus 3D comes with an HDMI port and DLNA Wi-Fi allowing you to view video content through a home TV, including 3D televisions for 3D content. Along with excellent Wi-Fi connections the Optimus 3D comes with great 3G connections allowing you to make use of email, social networking and instant messaging clients.

The Optimus 3D is powered by a dual core 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM and runs on Android Froyo. This will be updated to Android Gingerbread in the future. The Optimus 3D is also one of the first phones to come with a new gyro sensor for 3D controls as well as a 3D screen.

The Optimus 3D is an excellent smartphone with a fantastic screen, operating system, web content and entertainment features. Even without the 3D support the new Optimus would stand head and shoulders above its competition but the 3D gives it a little bit of an edge.
