The kitchen is the heart of the home. Most families will spend more time in their kitchen than in any other room of their house. They prepare their meals in this space, the children gather there to do their homework, and close friends are invited to this room when they visit. Most of the time friends and family will enter and exit the home through the kitchen.

Since this room is so well loved and often used, it is not surprising that homeowners are very particular about the décor of the room. People are especially particular about the design of their kitchen cabinets. The cabinetry makes up the largest part of furnishings in this room. The wood and finishes that these cabinets are built from will set the tone for the entire room’s décor. Since replacing the cabinetry is a large undertaking, when the kitchen is finished being remodeled it usually keeps that look for many years to come. For this reason people try to pick the cabinetry that will be serviceable and attractive for many years to come. They also desire kitchen cabinets that could go well with the overall feel of their home.

Inside every home ...
... there is a tendency to either have woods that are dark in colors, or to have light and natural looking wood. The different wood finishes are a way to make the wooden parts of a tie the home together. Generally if someone has yellow pine base boards and moldings, they will have yellow pine cabinetry and shelves as well. The continuity of the yellow pine throughout the home makes it all feel connected. When shopping for kitchen cabinets keep in mind what woods are already present in the home, and what woods would go well with them.

Before shopping for cabinetry you will need the exact dimensions of the room. This includes taking into the consideration of your wall height. The position of the sink and other appliances are probably not going to be able to change very much. Draw a sketch of the room showing where each piece is, the stove, the sink, the refrigerator and the dishwasher. Once you have that measure the spaces where you will want new cabinetry placed and write the measurement on the drawing. Mark both the length you need and the height you desire. Also mark on the drawing where the upper cabinets will be placed. The height of the upper cabinets will be important as well. There needs to be enough working room on the countertop between the upper and lower pieces, however, you will not want the upper cabinets placed so high that a ladder is required to get your dishes down.

The local building supply stores and home improvement stores in your town will carry some examples of the cabinetry designs they sell. There are online web sites that allow you to purchase cabinetry direct from the warehouses as well. The online sites will provide you an opportunity to look at all the different woods and finishes the warehouse stocks. Generally these warehouses will have a larger selection and lower prices than the home improvement stores.
