Twitter Might Kill Your Relationship
People in relationships, whether they are married or dating, often fear that something can come between them and their partner: something big and divisive enough to cause the bond between them to sever. Many people divorce or separate because of financial issues, infidelity and because of growing apart from their loved one. Dissolving a relationship because of an online social networking site evokes thoughts of Facebook stalkers. Everyone knows that you have to be careful about what you post on Facebook, especially if you are in a relationship. Before now, no one expected that there could be correlation between failed relationships and Twitter usage. Although Twitter is pretty new on the scene, it appears that it may have made a huge impact on the longevity of romantic relationships.
According to a recently released survey from OkCupid, a dating site, it is possible that Twitter could be the demise of a number of relationships. In this survey, more than 830,000 people between the age of 18 and 50 participated. The division in the survey compared the duration of the person's relationship that used Twitter everyday ...
... and the length of the relationships of the person that did not use Twitter daily. Based on the results, the people that use Twitter everyday had shorter relationships than those that don't. The difference wasn't that major however. The relationship times of the two groups only differ slightly. The link may seem haphazard but I think there is truly something that correlates between Twitter and relationship length.
Much like the people that are on Facebook all the time, people that are on Twitter daily can be a bit excessive. There are literally people that can't go one minute without checking or posting a tweet. Since Twitter is updated by the second, people that are addicted to Twitter engulf themselves in reading and writing information, thus consistently neglecting the person they are in a relationship with. Imagine being on a dinner date and your partner just can't part with their smartphone because of Twitter. This becomes a drag and annoyance after a while, which could lead to a breakup. No one wants to be in a love triangle with Twitter and another person.
I think that people that use Twitter everyday are more likely to be stalking their partner. If you are in a relationship with a person that is nosey, possessive or insecure, Twitter could be the tool they use to keep tabs on you. Twitter stalking can be very intense and is ultimately unattractive. No one wants to date the girl or guy that constantly has to know what you tweeted, when you tweeted, why you tweeted, who is following you, and who you are following. Twitter can just elevate the craziness of someone that is already susceptible to being a stalker. I don't personally think that there is anything wrong with using Twitter every day. What matters is when and why you use it. If you have to log on to Twitter every minute of every day to stalk or inadvertently neglect your partner, this is just ridiculous.
