Fathers Day celebrates the parental guidance of fathers, and the relationship that children have with their fathers as well as the influence of fathers in our society. For hundreds of years around the world, the celebration or honoring of fathers on a variety of dates has occurred The commercialized Fathers Day that is celebrated in the United States was inspired by the celebration of mothers on Mother’s Day. Recognizing the importance of our guiding maternal and paternal members and showing gratitude is something that human's have deemed important for as long as we have historical records.
In the United States Fathers Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in the month of June. This holiday became an official national holiday in 1972 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Clues to the origins of the holiday in the United States are a few. Father's Day complements Mother's Day, which is celebrated just a month earlier in the year. Because of the existence of Mother's Day, it only seemed appropriate that a father's day should be celebrated as well. It seemed proper to recognize and give thanks to both parents, not just one. Much ...
... of the credit for the creation of Father's Day goes to Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to honor her father, a Civil war veteran, who had raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. Sonora’s inspiration for Father’s Day arose during a sermon on one of the first Mother's Day celebrations in 1909. From Spokane, Washington, she proposed a Father’s Day and the local churches and religious community supported the idea. On June 19, 1910 young members of the local WMCA and YWCA wore roses to church honoring living and deceased fathers and so the first celebration of Fathers Day was established. Father's Day took much longer to become an official holiday, as many people, including Congress saw it becoming just another excuse for commercialized promotions. The US Congressed defeated several attempts to recognize Fathers Day as a national holiday. Although President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon made it a permanent national holiday.
It is customary to give Fathers Day Cards, and gifts, as well as spend time doing family oriented activities on this holiday. Giving a fathers day card can be a simple but meaningful gesture of one’s appreciation of his/her father. Today, family live far apart. So many miles away from our parents can make it difficult to show them that we appreciate them.
