The Optimus Black is one of the latest additions to LG's popular Optimus range of Android smartphones and could easily be overshadowed by its dual core and 3D siblings the Optimus 2X and the Optimus 3D. While the Optimus Black does not offer a 3D screen and it does not come with a dual core processor as had previously been suggested, it is arguably the best of the three devices.

The first thing that strikes you about the Optimus Black is just how slender it is. Measuring at just 9.2mm it is exceptionally slim for such a feature packed smartphone. This is thinner even than the iPhone 4 which is quite proud of its title of World's Thinnest Smartphone. With the release of the Optimus Black however, Apple will need to drop this advertising slogan as it will no longer possess any truth.

Like the iPhone 4 the Optimus Black also features an excellent screen. This is not a Retina Display but LG's latest NOVA screen technology. NOVA is currently the brightest screen technology in existence in the smartphone world and provides the Optimus Black with a level of visual vibrancy that will be unmatched by any other device. This ...
... is featured on a 4" IPS LCD screen which also offers a high degree of visual acuity and plenty of space for smartphone activities such as apps, games and web browsing to be enjoyed to their fullest.

The Optimus Black runs on Android Froyo although this will be updatable to Gingerbread within the near future. The Google OS is combined with LG's Optimus interface that is a breeze to use and comes with some excellent features including fantastic social network support. The Android/Optimus combo also provides a wealth of messaging options including threaded SMS, instant messaging and email.

With a screen as fantastic as the one found on the Optimus Black you would expect to be able to enjoy some great visual features. And indeed you can, with support for high quality video through the phone's media player as well as streaming video content from online services such as YouTube. The Optimus Black fortunately comes with 3G and Wi-Fi so that you can easily enjoy such online content with minimal hassle. The Optimus Black also supports Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA, so that you can output any video content from the phone to a larger screen such as a home television.

The Optimus Black also provides excellent video support through its 5 megapixel camera that includes 720p video recording. The phone also comes with one of the highest resolution front facing cameras for video calling, offering one of the best video chat experiences found on a modern smartphone.

Other entertainment options include music support and an FM radio, as well as many games and apps to enjoy from Android Market. The phone comes with 2GB of internal storage with a further 32GB available through microSD, providing you with plenty of room for personal media content. It would be easy to overlook the Optimus Black due to the presence of the 2X and the 3D, but the Black provides a slimness and brightness that these other two LG phones are not able to offer.
