If you are looking to improve the appearance of your legs by removing those unsightly clusters of blue, red, or purple veins on the ankles, calves, and thighs, then Sclerotherapy might be right for you. The solution causes the unwanted veins to collapse and fade away. Utilizing Asclera, an FDA approved sclerosing medication, a certified Plastic Surgery offers a safe, effective, and relatively painless treatment that eradicates spider veins. Give yourself the legs you’ve always wanted and schedule a consultation with a Plastic Surgeon

The procedure is performed comfortably in the office. Your doctor will determine if you are a candidate and perform the procedure the same day. It’s best to avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications and stop smoking. If you anticipate that you will be undergoing the treatment during your first visit, then you must bring store bought specialty leg compression garments. If the areas are only below the knee, then the garments must be knee high. If the areas include the thigh, then the garments must be thigh high. The garments must provide at least 20-30 mmHg compression. Truform ...
... and Jobst offer very nice low profile garments in many different colors. These specialty garments may be found at your local medical supply store. The doctor will review and discuss your medical history. This includes why you want the procedure and the desired outcome; a detailed focused review of any current medical conditions, drug allergies, family history, medications, alcohol, tobacco, and previous procedures performed near the area to be treated. The doctor will then examine your veins in detail, recommend a treatment course, discuss the likely outcomes, and review any risks or potential complications. If you are a good candidate, you will be asked to sign treatment consent forms, and then proceed with the treatment.

Asclera is injected into the vein without the need for anesthesia. The vein will fade from view. Eventually this causes the blood vessel to close and be replaced with other tissue. The typical time for treatment is 15 - 45 minutes. At the completion of the procedure, you will be placed in a low profile, light weight leg compression garment. Except for showering, you will wear the garment continuously for the next 3 days and then only during the daytime for the next 2 weeks. For an additional cost, you will be offered a post procedure VitaMedica recovery regimen to help decrease bruising and swelling and improve the healing process. You will go home shortly after the procedure is complete. You are encouraged to walk. You will remove any dressings and can start showering the next day. You may feel some cramping in your legs for the first couple days. The discomfort is usually temporary and does not require prescription medication. You are able to drive and carry on with normal activities except for strenuous exercise, prolonged periods of standing or sitting, long plane flights, sunbathing, and hot baths or saunas for about two to four weeks.

Areas that were not treated during the first visit can be treated in about two weeks. Additional treatments of previously treated areas is performed after about one month of healing. Each patient’s treatment is individualized. Two or more separate sessions are usually required to achieve optimum results. There is no guarantee that new spider veins won’t appear as time passes. You may need further treatments of new veins as they emerge.

Overall, spider vein treatment is very safe and associated with a low likelihood of potential complications. Some risks include change in skin sensation, unfavorable scarring, bleeding, infection, poor healing of injection sites, damage to deeper structures, allergies, skin discoloration and swelling, skin contour irregularities, pain, and need for further injection therapy. While technically, Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose veins, this treatment has not been tested on veins larger than three millimeters. Additionally, patient’s should not received treatment if there is a known allergy to polidocanol (Asclera), have an acute vein or blood clotting (thromboembolic) disease, or are pregnant or nursing.

Although genetics, weight gain, prolonged sitting or standing, pregnancy, and hormonal shifts are some of the contributing factors. Spider vein treatment can be performed on people of any age as long you have a positive outlook, realistic goals, and are committed to the prescribed course of treatment.
