If you are going to a holiday by car, maybe as part of a family road trip, then it might be a good idea to take the time to practise towing the trailer.

Driving using a trailer is not that taxing, however if you are not used to the experience then it can be a little daunting. The number one issue is becoming familiar and comfortable with the extra length of the trailer and how best to tow it with a new vehicle.

So if this sounds familiar and you are going on a trip, then here are a few tips to remember to ensure you have a safe trip in your Honda and feel a bit more confident about driving with a trailer, as generated by Lease Car.

1) Firstly, you should take a look through the manual. Trailers or caravans should have a manual or maybe just a safety label on the inside that will tell you what size car you need to safely tow your trailer. You should also check the Honda manual as you don't want to overload your Honda's engine.

2) Next, check to see if the trailer has a hitch package. This is basically a facility to attach your car batter to your camper or trailer electronic. This system is a must have ...
... feature as it provides the electricity to the lights on the trailer, making sure that other drivers can see that you are on the road.

3) Before you set off take the time to test what you can see from your window. This could involve buying mirror extensions to ensure that you can see the camper and also to let you see any vehicles that are behind you or at your side. Just imagine how bad a crash could be, it would not only ruin your holiday but it could cause serious injuries.

4) Before you put the key in the car you should have an inspection. This should involve a thorough inspection of the trailer fittings and connection points. It will include: checking hitch wiring is long enough to account for turns, checking tyre pressure, connecting the equalizer and stabilizer, ensuring that the trailer is level and putting the trailer tongue in the right position.

5) Make sure all your belongings are secure even before you start the engine. You really should have an inspection as you don't want get to your holiday destination and find all of your things broken on the floor and smashed to a million pieces.

6) Never go down a hill too fast. Switch to a lower gear and then gently go down the hill, this is the only real way to deal with hills and inclines.

7) During reversing you need to be patient and be extra careful. During a steering manoeuvre any slight touch on the wheel can damage the caravan or camper and destroy the tow bar, making it unusable.

8) Then, when you are driving you need to avoid abrupt or tight turns. If it is possible you should change your driving style so that steering adjustments can happen ahead of time, if you do this then it will ensure that you are safer during your driving holiday.

9) Lastly, most Hondas should be appropriate for towing but if you have concerns then it might be a good idea to hire or lease a newer Honda instead. For example, when I went camping I took out a Honda contract leasing deal from Lease Car which I found to be better for my towing needs.

If you decide to follow this advice then hopefully you really will have the best time during your next trip, regardless of the location.
