Believe it or not, before video games, computers and televisions invaded our lives, there was plenty of fun to be had around the house. There isn’t a better place than the home and there aren’t better people than your family to share in your challenges and joys. I know it’s hard to convince children today, but people really did have fun without sitting glued to the “idiot box.” The main difference between those days of yore and today’s world is that, back then, they had a lot more fun with each other’s company. Children back then watched less television, read more books, solved puzzles and had a great time with their parents and grandparents. Imagine sitting around the kitchen table playing a game of Scrabble or Monopoly with your siblings while the smell of goodies fills the kitchen …sounds like heaven on earth doesn’t it?

A lot of parents now make a conscious effort to spend “quality” time with their children. But rather than force an intimate bonding session (which they will surely resent,) why not spend time with your children playing a board game? But you must be very mindful of the game that ...
... you choose to play. Today’s children are quickly bored with games where they get own a house or arrange their finances. Rather than play these games, why not choose a game that is a lot more fun and gets the whole family involved? Spontuneous is a game that revolves around remembering lyrics from songs. This lyric game involves every player making a list of “trigger words.” Every player is expected to sing a song that includes the trigger word in the lyrics. The player that manages to include 5 trigger words in their sung lyrics gets to roll the dice to play the Spontuneous challenge—and the player to complete the challenge first wins the game! The trick here is to choose trigger words with care, because if none of the players manage the task, the player who has given the lyric gets to sing the song and get ahead in the challenge.

You could even add in a little twist in the game by including a theme. For example, if it’s the Christmas season, you could ask everyone to sing songs that have the Christmas theme in them. Spontuneous is ideal for every member of the family. This singing game is all about fun and happiness as everyone sings songs together. Everyone, especially the elderly, will love the game, as it’s sure to bring back fond memories. These games instantly brighten up the atmosphere and lighten up the festive season.

Robert Ridgeway has written several articles on family games including lyric games and singing games.
