There are many reason why your attention may be drawn to the Nokia N8, the top of the range smartphone from the renowned manufacturers. The stylish looks together with the range of colours available will appeal to the style concious amongst you, whilst the improved Symbian operating will please the more technically minded consumers. There is one area however that really does excel, and that is the camera facilities, which are worthy of a place on a dedicated still camera let alone a mobile handset.

With regards to the size of the image, the N8 can capture one of the highest resolutions possible on a mobile phone which is 12 mega pixels. Translated into simple terms, this means that the handset can squeeze 12 million individual pixels into an image. Camera enthusiasts may argue that such a number is not necessary for photographs displayed on a relatively small screen, but on the flip side of the coin should you transfer the images to a laptop, or want to display them on a home television screen, then the extra density of image could well come in handy. ... and there are a number of other factors that influence just how good your final image will be. One area where the new N8 really ups its game is with the optics used to capture the image. These are a type of lens favoured by many professionally photographers, renowned for producing a realistic image full of colour. So what if you are taking photographs in poor lighting conditions? Modern sensors are much more sensitive than ever before, but when lighting conditions do drop, this can produce a grainer image. This is where the Xenon flash fitted on the Nokia comes into play, providing a stronger burst of light than its LED and Dual LED counterparts, and therefore helping to maintain the quality of the picture.

The hardware is not the only impressive element of the camera facilities on the Nokia N8, but an array of setting on the software side of things further improves the whole experience. Just as you would expect to find on dedicated cameras, there are manual exposure and white balance levels, as well as options to adjust colour and sharpness of the shot. This really allows you to tailor the shot to meet your exact requirements. If you want to capture a close up image, for example an insect or a piece of text on a page, then a macro mode allows effective close up snaps. Obviously, this is a mobile phone, and nine times out of ten, you will probably just want to access the camera and take a quick snap, and the autofocus helps ensure your image always look as great as possible. In addition to this, the phone sports face detection which help ensure that the N8 is focused on the faces within a frame rather than something less important in the background.
