Let’s kick things off with the non-explosive paint grenades which are more or less similar to water balloons as they involve a flexible bladder that is most often made out of rubber tubing, which is sealed off tightly on one end and more loosely at the other one. As you probably already know, the paint in the grenade is under pressure and is secured with a pin, which when is pulled out, further loosens one end.

After the pin is pulled and the paintball grenade is tossed, the end opens as it strikes the ground, spinning because of the released pressurized paint inside, thus splattering the paint around in a somewhat similar radius like the one on a real explosive hand grenade. Despite the fact that the distribution of the paint is not perfect, most of the modern paintball grenades produce a fairly uniform scattering of paint, which should be more than enough to mark an uncovered paintball player that sits too close to the grenade.

Moving on, we find the explosive paint grenades which are pretty familiar to a real and dangerous hand grenade as it uses a fuse and a small amount of explosive black powder, necessary ...
... for spreading the paint. A core of black powder with a small fuse is contained inside a pouch of paint, which is then installed in an outer casing. A fuse topped with a friction igniting material extends from the grenade’s top, and it can easily be lit by striking it like you would do a match. After the grenade is thrown by the paintball player the fuse burns down, followed immediately by the explosion of the black powder, which spreads the paint around a localized area.
The non-explosive paint grenades are the most common in the world of recreational paintballing thanks to the fact that they do not produce a loud bang (which in many cases can have a significant strategically role), plus they are considerable more easier to make and cheaper.

Now that we have discussed about the two types of paintball grenades, it is time to talk about how to use one. You need to get within throwing distance of your opponent and always remember that a situation in which you have multiple targets inside a structure is the best possible way to use a paintball grenade.

When you have decided to use the grenade, you need to pull the pin out without letting go of it. The grenade must be tossed so that it will land as close as possible to your competitors. You need to keep your paintball gun ready just in case your rivals will attempt to bolt away from the grenade - this would be a very good opportunity to tag them with a fast shot.

Taking into consideration that paintball grenades are expensive, we advise you to use them wisely, preferably on an enclosed area for getting maximum efficiency. Always wear eye protection when around paintball guns and grenades. Remember to always have fun, as this is the whole idea behind this recreational sport, to have lots of fun!
