American bulldogs are loyal and protective, stocky but a little temperamental. Their strong jaw and build makes them appear fierce but they are also great pets for families and tend to be good working dogs. The breed is excellent as guard dogs when there is an adult master in the family. If you are planning to get one of these stunning dogs for your family then it would be important for you to learn a few basic details about them so that you know what to expect when you bring a pup home.

Children and Pets

American bulldogs are quite suitable for families with children but socialization is very important. Getting a pup at a young age and introducing it to your kids and pets at home would be better since the pup will get used to having young kids around. You will have to train your dog to be tolerant around children. Ensure that your dog has a good sized play area so that it has its own space. With pets, these dogs will need to be mixed with them at a very young age so that they find it easy to get along. Their natural instinct is to prey and stalk on smaller animals since they are hunting dogs. However, when you ...
... socialize them from a young age and train them well these dogs can also be loving and kind. These dogs are dominating and are leaders so you will also have to teach them to respect your commands.

Care and Training

Like any other breed, American bulldogs will have to be taken care of well. These dogs have fewer health concerns in comparison to other dogs but one thing that you will have to be careful about is hip dysplasia. It is important that these dogs get enough exercise on a daily basis. Normally, an hour of exercise everyday would be enough to keep them in good shape and active. Provide proper care to keep any type of health problems away and a visit to a vet on a regular basis would be enough to keep your pet in good shape.

This breed has an overall good attitude and will be able to focus well on tasks given and will follow directions and orders well once they are trained. They are master focused and so known to be good companions. These dogs are also known to have good stamina and will love good outdoor exercise. Remember, with American bulldogs timely training is the key.
