American bulldogs are known for their strong personality and are loved by all because of this particular trait. These dogs are very muscular, powerful and athletic and are still very suitable for families with children. However, you should know that these dogs cannot really be handled by anyone and everyone. One of the main reasons for this is the natural instincts of this breed. Training them will need some creativity, resources and a lot of patience.

Stubborn and Strong Minded Breed

One of the first things that you should know about American bulldogs if you plan to get one or already own one is that they are very stubborn and strong minded. These dogs will need socialization and obedience training right from the beginning when they are puppies. These dogs have a natural trait which tends to be strong and aggressive and if they are not trained well in a young age it may be a little difficult to change their attitude and behavior later on. According to most professionals, this breed is not suitable for first time pet owners. A little experience with dogs would be necessary for you to be able to handle them effectively. ...

Obedience Training

Obedience training in American bulldogs is very necessary. These dogs have a dominant nature and do not really like to be controlled. However, this is something that can be cured through training. You will have to show your pet that you are the master and do not have to be controlled or be submissive to your pet. You should also note that the breed tends to get bored very easily. Try to introduce new rewards like dog treats when they obey a command and avoid punishment as much as possible. Treating your pet will motivate him/her to do better and to obey you well.

These dogs also need socialization. Because of their aggressive and fierce nature they may not respond well to strangers if they have not been well socialized from a young age. You will have to expose your pet to other people, dogs and pets around you. The breed has a natural guarding instinct which makes them a little aggressive towards people they don’t know. For this reason, start socializing the pup right when you get one home. Once you do this, it will be able to identify your friends and will not be aggressive towards them at all. Remember that these dogs are dominant by nature but are trainable. Take your time and be patient with them since consistent training always tends to work well with American bulldogs.
