American bulldogs are preferred choices for several families. Those who have grown up around powerful breeds like Schnauzer and Rottweilers tend to love the bulldogs well. No matter what your reasons are, it is normally seen that most families tend to be loyal to a particular breed.

Features and Traits

To understand if American bulldogs would be right for you and your family it would be important to understand their traits and features. These dogs have very lovable features and faces. They are stubborn, hard headed and tend to be a little difficult to train. However, once trained the breed is very loyal and loving which makes it all worth the effort. These dogs are also very intelligent which makes them seem to be a part of the family. These dogs will offer you companionship and protection from intruders but it is definitely not the breed to choose if you have never owned a dog before. Training these dogs will need a lot of dedication and patience and without that you will end up with a pet that is out of control, troublemaker and aggressive!

Bulldogs and Children

If you have children or infants ...
... in your family, one of the fist things you will have to find out is if a particular breed is safe and suitable around children. Fortunately, American bulldogs are suitable for families with children. However, they will have to be trained to know how to behave around very young children and infants. Children should also be taught to play gently with a puppy so that the pet doesn’t get defensive or threatened. Children must be encouraged to attend obedience training of the pet so that they know the commands for the pet. This may be a little difficult with very young children but it is an important lesson for them to learn. The pup will become loving and loyal to children once trained well.

Owning any type of dog breed is a huge commitment for a family. The bulldogs are strong and large so you will have to keep this point in mind while making decisions. You will have to think if you will be able to handle a dog that is as large as this breed and if your children will be comfortable around a large breed of this size. Also, these dogs tend to eat a lot more because of their size when compared to the smaller breeds. You will have to keep the financial aspect in mind while selecting your pet. Other than that, American bulldogs tend to be very loyal, intelligent and lovable.
