One of the main reasons why American bulldogs are great pets is because they do not need extensive grooming. These dogs do not shed much since their fur is coarse and short. Ideally, grooming should begin right when your pet is a puppy. These dogs are muscular and very energetic and if you start the grooming process right in their puppyhood it would be easier for them to get used to it.

Brushing Your Pet

American bulldogs have shorter coats but they would need to be brushed regularly. Use a soft bristle brush so that their skin does not get hurt. Avoid brushes which may be harsh or may have metal teeth since their coat is very close to their skin. The brush should be tested first and if your pet seems to be irritated it is best to try another brush which may be softer. Use brushing gloves during the process for removing shed hair without any discomfort. The best way to brush is from the head towards the rump along the fur grain.

Bathing Your Puppy

Like any other dog, even American bulldogs need to be bathed. If your pup is messy and likes to play outdoors it may be necessary to bathe him often. ...
... Owners should know that bathing their puppy too often can actually strip the minerals and essential oils from their skin which can affect their coat. Once or twice a month is sufficient if your pup doesn’t tend to get too dirty while playing. The process of bathing is actually quite simple since the breed has short coat. For bathing your dog, run warm water in the bath. You may also bathe your pet outside with a hose if the weather is warm and if the water temperature is right. Once the dog is soaked in water, work shampoo on to his coat. There are many special shampoos available today at pet stores everywhere. Each dog may respond favorably to different brands of shampoo so you may have to test different brands before you find the best one around.

Ensure that you clean the paws well where dirt can easily get accumulated. After shampooing your dog, rinse off the coat well. Ensure that rinsing is done thoroughly since even a little bit of soap can lead to itching. Since the breed has a very short coat they will only need a towel to be dried off. During warm weather a walk in the sun outside will also dry them off quickly. Grooming American bulldogs is actually quite easy and simple.
