If you’re looking to get away from the normal tourist destinations in Mexico, then you should consider experiencing all that San Miguel de Allende has to offer. While tourism does account for over 36 % of the jobs and income here, there were about 250,000 visitors to this area last year. This is compared to 2.2 million people that visit Puerto Vallarta each year. There is a long and rich history in this quaint Mexican destination, which is why it was named World History Site in 2008 by UNESCO.

The city is named for Ignacio Allende and is located in the state of Guanajuato. It was the first municipality to be declared independent from Spain during the Mexican War of Independence. While almost a ghost town at one point in its past, the city’s revival during the 20th century was mainly due to two art schools, the Instituto Allende and the Escuelo de Bellas Artes. Expats, artists, and writers move here to experience all areas of the fine arts culture.

While the main industries today are electrical energy, wood products, and metal products, agriculture has been a mainstay in the city’s history. Fruit orchards ...
... were prevalent during the 19th century and many farms still provide local produce. Brass and glass items are popular with tourists and you’ll find shops from some of the best metal and glass artists in the world. Locals claim that the zarape or the Mexican poncho was first used here.

The historic center of San Miguel de Allende is an area of 64 city blocks and it remains much as it was 250 years ago. This is the area that UNESCO recognized, along with the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, which is a gorgeous church whose construction started in 1765. Other notable churches include Ontorio de San Felipe Neri Church and the Nestra Senora de la Salud Church. Tourists also visit the Casa de Allende Museum, which is where Ignacio Allende grew up and the Plaza Civica or the Civic Plaza, which is the city’s largest marketplace.

Another place of interest is El Chorro, which is the oldest neighborhood in the city. You’ll find several smaller hotels San Miguel de Allende here. If you’re looking for true luxury, there are a few hotels San Miguel de Allende that sit high on the hills surrounding the city, offering fantastic panoramic views of the area. As a travel tip, look for a hotel that offers shuttle service to many of the popular tourist areas in the city.

The mild climate here is also what draws people year around. With summer highs around 80s and lows in the 50’s, you’ll love the warm afternoons and cooler evenings. Some of the city’s festivals run late into the night, such as Sanmiguelada, which is the equivalent to Spain’s Running of the Bulls and the Festival de Musica de Carmara, the Chamber Music Festival. If you are searching for a charming destination for your next trip to Mexico, you should really consider this city full of spectacular corners to discover and explore!
