Ceramic Veneers Versus Composite Veneers
Having veneers fitted over existing teeth is an extremely popular option, with many people visiting cosmetic dentists for veneers in Houston to find out more. Veneers are the ideal solution for teeth that may have become slightly discolored or which are slightly crooked, or for teeth which have gaps in between them which the patient would prefer to be closed either partially or completely. They are also excellent for correcting teeth that have become chipped or worn. There are two types of veneers, and your dentist may recommend one or the other to you depending on your particular situation, and the position of the veneers in the mouth. The two different types are:
. Composite veneers are made from a special kind of resin, and these are good because they can be completed in as little as one visit to the dental office. Your cosmetic dentist veneers Houston will need to remove a small amount of tooth enamel from the front surface and sides of the tooth ...
... that is to be veneered. Once this surface is cleaned and dried they will prepare it using a special solution that improves the bond of the resin to the tooth. The next process is to apply the composite material to the tooth, and it can then be hardened using a special light. The composite may be applied in several layers to get the desired effect and shape, before it is smooth and polished.
. Ceramic veneers are made from porcelain and will require at least two visits to the dental office. Your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing an appropriate amount of tooth enamel on the sides and front, but will then take an impression of your mouth which is sent to a dental laboratory. The laboratory will cast up the impression so that it's an exact replica of your teeth on which they can construct the ceramic veneers. They will be precision made to fit over your teeth in a shade of ceramic chosen by your dentist. During your next visit your dentist will then try in the completed veneers to make sure they look fabulous, before cementing them permanently in place.
Both types of veneer have advantages and disadvantages, with one of the major advantages of the composite veneers being the short time required for them to be completed by cosmetic dentists. The finished restoration will be reasonably strong and hard wearing, but may not be so resistant to staining as ceramic veneers.
Ceramic veneers tend to be more expensive than composite veneers, and take longer to complete, but the results can be incredibly natural. Composite veneers do not let as much natural light through to the underlying tooth structure as porcelain veneers, and it is this translucency that creates a natural appearance. Ceramic veneers look incredibly fragile and are very thin, but once cemented in place are actually quite strong, and should last a considerable number of years if looked after properly.
