What Are Hysterectomy Types And Risks?

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that implies the fact that the uterus of a woman is partially or totally removed. It is a common surgical procedure and the need for it might occur out of various causes. Cancer is one of the main reasons for hysterectomy. The decision is usually taken depending on how advanced the disease is. Hysterectomy can also be required in case of uterine fibroids, when it is not possible to remove them without affecting the uterus.
Endometriosis, abnormal vaginal bleeding, uterine prolapse and adenomyosis are also possible causes of hysterectomy. In each of the diseases mentioned above, hysterectomy is basically the last solution, after all the other treatment options have been explored. If nothing else works, then surgery is considered. In very rare cases, hysterectomy is needed in women that undergo a C-section and excessive bleeding occurs. Bleeding is normally kept under control with other methods, but in few severe cases, uterus removal is the only possible solution.
Hysterectomy can be of three types, depending on how much of the uterus is actually removed. The first one is called ...
... subtotal hysterectomy and it means that the surgeon removes the upper part of the uterus, but the cervix is not affected by the procedure. Total hysterectomy is named like this because it implies the total removal of the uterus and the cervix. The most serious form of hysterectomy is the radical one. This leaves the woman without the uterus, the cervix and the upper part of the vagina. It is only performed in very serious medical conditions, like cancer in advanced phases, for instance. Sometimes, depending on the cause of hysterectomy, this might be accompanied by removal of ovaries.
Hysterectomy, like all surgical procedures, also implies certain risks. These need to be discussed with the doctor before surgery. In women who also have the ovaries removed, early menopause is going to occur. Other complications that might occur are infection, allergic reactions to medication, forming of blood clots that reach other organs or side effects caused by anesthesia.
There are multiple possibilities in what concerns the way in which hysterectomy is performed. The most common one is abdominal hysterectomy. It is performed through an incision in the abdominal area. Other methods of removing the uterus are through the vagina (vaginal hysterectomy) or with the help of the laparoscope. In what concerns the laparoscopic procedure, this can either be done thorough a small incision in the abdominal area or through a small incision in the vagina. There is also robot assisted hysterectomy, very similar with the laparoscopic one, except the fact that a robotic system is used instead of a laparoscope.
