#10 : Good Report Card Discount

You've probably heard of this one before, but it really does work...with some companies. Not every insurer offers this discount because the statistical link between good grades and good driving is pretty weak. Still, it is worth asking about.
All A's and B's are the minimum requirement.

#9: Low Mileage Discount

Teens seem to love driving everywhere, but they really don't need to be driving all that much. If you can keep their annual mileage low, they can get a low annual mileage discount that reduces premiums considerably.

Things that can reduce mileage are:

* Carpooling
* Walking and biking to nearby places
* Recreation other than driving
* Choosing nearby alternatives to distant locations

#8: Defensive Driving Courses

You can combat the inexperience of a teen by using defensive driving courses. Teens who have earned defensive driving certificates can save as much as $100 a year. Classes can be taken online, at driving schools, or even community colleges. The savings will earn back the cost of a class in ...
... no time!

Another good point is that defensive driving classes really do teach people to avoid collisions, and that will save you on insurance and other things for a lifetime.

#7: Safety and Security Add-ons

A few after-market devices will allow for long-term savings at minimal upfront costs. Anything that prevents theft or makes recovery easier helps, as do items that make passengers safer:

* Lo-Jack
* Mirror Turn Signals
* Alarm
* Rear and Blind-spot Sensors

#6: Black Box

These are little digital monitors that report certain driving habits to the insurer. That way, they can tell how someone is driving. They also cut down on the cost of theft since cars are more recoverable.

The only reason this one isn't listed higher is that, should the teen be a bad driver, prices will soar instead of shrink.

#5: Add to a Parent's Policy

The prices for teens drop when policies are combined with people who have better rates. If parents are good drivers, historically speaking, then the rates will drop.

#4: Exempt Teens on Parents' Policies from Using Other Vehicles

Limit teens to using their own vehicle and there will be less risk on the other vehicles in the household. Exemptions mean that a teen cannot drive the other insured autos without policy termination.

#3: Avoid Driving Sportscars and SUVs

As a teen, driving a sportscar or SUV is a recipe for auto insurance disaster. They are hard to control, prone to accidents for inexperienced drivers, and cost far more to insure for anybody.

#2: Buy a Used Car with a High Safety Rating

Newer but used vehicles that have won safety awards tend to be the cheapest to insure. If a teen drives one of these vehicles, the insurance cost will be significantly reduced. If you are curious what the financial difference will be between two cars, just get auto insurance quotes for each.

#1: Comparison Shop Using Auto Insurance Quotes

Using Auto Insurance Quotes to compare rates is quick, effective, and free. Find better savings and higher coverage in no time!
