Training A Coyote Hunting Dog
As most of you already know by now, coyotes are one type of nuisance animal that ranchers and farmers hunt in order to prevent loss of livestock, or even loss of small-sized pets. Hunting coyotes with a dog is a recent trend that it is conducted in to two distinct methods. While some encourage focusing on the dog hunting method, in which a pack of dogs attacks & kills coyotes, other appreciate that the coyote dogging method is more efficient, a method in which the dog aids to draw the animal back to the hunter.
Regardless of the method you want to use, you need to choose an appropriate hunting dog like a Black Mouth Cur, an American Staghound, a Mountain View Cur, a Greyhound or a Plott Hound. You either adopt or purchase one of these dogs as a puppy to build a strong bond between you and the dog and to have a longer amount of time available for training.
You need to acquaint your hunting dog with the coyotes by presenting the dog some coyote carcasses and a trail. This should be done at an early age so that the dog will not stop instinctively every time he spots a coyote and begins barking & growling (in ...
... this case, the coyote will either run away or attack the dog). You will definitely want the hunting dog(s) to notice the coyotes but at the same time seem interested so that the animal follows the dog back to you, which will give you a proper moment fort taking the coyote down.
You will have to train your hunting dog to return to you when he sees or smells a coyote. By doing so, you will be able to know if there is a coyote in your area or you can even get a clear chance of shooting a coyote if he starts following your trained hunting dog. In order to train the dog to return to you, you should start by presenting him a coyote carcass and tracks, and standing back away from the dead coyote or tracks, offering your hunting dog a treat. Eventually, the hound will learn to recognize the scent of a coyote.
In addition, it is highly recommended to introduce your dog to all of the places in which you plan on hunting coyotes. Allow the hound to condition its body to the terrain and climate. It is recommended to let the dog run for at least one hour each and every day in order to help him maintain a good body, as well as learn more about the hunting environment. If the dog isn’t in top shape, there are chances that during the hunting season the hound might get hurt by the coyotes.
Do not forget to check your state’s laws and regulations regarding hunting coyotes with a dog. One last recommendation would be to dress the dog in a hunting vest in order to fully protect him during the coyote hunting seasons as there many hunters out so you’d better be safe than sorry.
