According to different scholars, the gospel of Luke is categorized as the most comprehensive account of Jesus’ life as compared to other gospel. All the works of Jesus Christ in saving mankind have been profoundly demonstrated by Luke. Precisely, the topic of Jesus raising the dead has been clearly tackled by the gospel of Luke. In this case, the concept of death refers to both physical death as well as spiritual death. In this regard, the theme of raising the dead has been recurring and very dominant in the scriptures of Luke. The gospel of Luke has clearly illustrated different scene and contexts where Jesus Christ showed his love for mankind by raising up the dead. In this regard, this paper will profoundly discuss and analyze the concept of Jesus raising the dead in the gospel of Luke. In this case, the works of Jesus raising the dead, both spiritually and physically will be highlighted as well as giving their spiritual significance (Pilch, 2000).
Throughout the New Testament, the life of Jesus Christ is profoundly demonstrated and his mighty power over nature. Different authors of the new testament as well as the ...
... Old testament have extensively and precisely demonstrated the nature of God’s power and more so his power over death. Precisely, death was the biggest punishment given to man after disobedience to God at the Garden of Eden. God has shown his mercy and compassion to mankind by giving his only son to come and save mankind. The miraculous work of Jesus has been intensive and extensively been illustrated in the four Gospels of Luke, Mark, John and Mathew. Despite the various in the expression of the message, it should be noted that all Gospel communicate the same information. Significantly, the concept of Jesus raising the death has been categorized as the biggest miracle and a show of mighty by Jesus. In this context, the concept of death is referring to both physical and spiritual death; whereby mankind had been separated from god after the first sin (Cotter, 1999).
To begin with, the miraculous power of Jesus Christ has been demonstrated by the act of Jesus raising the son of a widow. As described in the gospel of Luke: 7, Jesus was going to the town of Nain with his disciples when they met a crowd carrying a dead man. From the story, it is made clear that the dead man was the only son of the widow and that contributed to the grief of the crowd. Jesus Christ through his mercy and love for human kind was very compassionate towards the crowd and more so the widow. When Jesus saw the widow, his heart went out to her and said, “Don’t cry” (Luke: 7:13). Jesus proceeded and touched the bier which was used to carry the dead body. Jesus said “young man. I say to you, get up!” (Luke: 7: 14). Interestingly, the dead man stood up and started walking. Jesus took the resurrected man and gave him back to his mother. This phenomenon was a show of mighty and led to enormous praises to God by the crowd. The crowd who witnessed the rising of the man his heard saying “God has come to help his people” (Luke: 7:16) (Pilch, 2000).
In Luke 8, the power and mighty of Jesus in rising up the dead is clearly demonstrated. Luke8: 41 highlight the story of Jesus raising a dead girl and healing of a sick woman. Based on the story, Jairus who was a synagogue leader came and fell in Jesus feet pleading for Jesus mercy to go and heal his sick daughter. On the way to Jairus house, Jesus healed a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. The power of Jesus was reflected in this scenario in that, by touching Jesus clothes, the woman was healed. After Jesus reached Jairus house, the girl had already died and every one was wailing and mourning. Sarcastically, Jesus said “she is not dead but asleep.” (Luke 8: 41). Jesus raised the girl from her death bed and said “My child, get up!” (Luke 8: 41) immediately the soul of the young girl was restored and came back to life. This is really a clear demonstration of Jesus power to rise up the dead (Pilch, 2000).
In the gospel of Luke, Jesus has also expressed his miraculous nature by healing a man with leprosy. In literal world, leprosy was death by itself and any one with leprosy was excluded from the society and counted among the dead. In Luke: 5:12, the story of Jesus meeting a man with leprosy is being demonstrated. Based on this story, the man with leprosy fell down after seeing Jesus and begged for healing. Interestingly, Jesus showed his compassionate to the suffering of the man and said “am willing, be clean!” immediately after Jesus said these words, the leprosy left the man. Despite the instructions given by Jesus, commanding the man not to talk about the matter, the news was all over and people praised Jesus (Robbins, 1996).
In the gospel of Luke 5:17, the story of Jesus healing and forgiving a paralyzed man is also demonstrated. In this story, both physical and spiritual resurrection is being demonstrated; whereby Jesus is restoring both spiritual and physical wellbeing to people. In this story, a group of men came to where Jesus was carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. Unfortunately, there was no way to where Jesus was and thus they passed him through the roof. On seeing the paralyzed man, Jesus told him, your sins have been forgiven. Miraculously, Jesus commanded the man to wake up and take up his mat. Instantly, the man walks up and went around praising God. From this story, the power of Jesus raising the dead is being demonstrated (Cotter, 1999).
The concept of raising the dead is also highlighted in Luke chapter nine; whereby Jesus heals a demon possessed boy. In literal world, the boy was just but dead since he was not able to live normal life. In relation with this story, a man came and begged for Jesus’ help saying that his only son had been possessed by demons. The situation was so severe that, the demons threw the boy into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. Despite the disciple’s failure to drive the demons out, the boy’s father was very confident that Jesus was potential of curing the boy. Miraculously, Jesus rebuked the demons, healed the boy and gave him to his father. From this story, the power of Jesus to raise the dead is being demonstrated (Wainwright, 2006).
