Mike Marshall’s Screwball Earned Him The 1974 Nl Cy Young Award

In Major League Baseball today we are used to seeing starting pitchers pitch more than 200 innings in a season, but it isn’t common to see those sorts of numbers for relief pitchers. Marshall was truly a work horse out of the bullpen.

His success really started to come on while he was with the Montreal Expos. The Expos were his 4th team and he was a solid pitcher early in his career, but he really became known as a go-to guy in the bullpen in the 1973 season. While he was with the Expos he was name “Fireman of the Year.” When a relief pitcher is called a fireman it is used to describe a player that can put out the fire of the other team. He was known for his ability to stop the rallies of opposing teams.

After being named Fireman of the Year with the Expos he moved on to play with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers have always been known for their great pitching and he truly had a great season with the Dodgers in 1974. He set several records during the year that were very noteworthy.

... or more games in the MLB today, he managed to make his way to the mound 106 times during the 1974 season. At one stretch he even pitched for 13 straight games. Over the season he finished with 208.3 innings. Every one of those innings came out of the bullpen. He finished the season with a 15-12 record and was named the NL Cy Young for his performance that year. He was also named the pitcher of the year and was selected as an NL All-Star for the Dodgers that season.

He continued to have tremendous success out of the bullpen and was named to another All-Star team for the Dodgers the following year. His time with the Dodgers was short, as it was with every team that he played with and he was on a new team by 1977.

He did manage to win the Fireman of the Year award with the Dodgers in 1974 and then won it with a 3rd team in 1979. He was pitching for the Minnesota Twins during that season.

Marshall managed to fool pitchers with his screwball. A screwball is a pitch that curves in the opposite direction of the traditional curveball and is difficult to track because of the opposite nature of the pitch.

Over the course of Marshall’s career he managed to lead the league in appearances 4 different times. He also was the leader in saves three times and finished more games than any other pitcher during 5 different seasons over the course of his career.
