When setting up a life insurance nz plan there are a number of points to check. For example the financial strength of the insurer you are considering is vital to consider. Also, each policy will have a range of features to choose from and compare with other life insurance policies.

If you are comparing life insurance plans, something that should always be on your list to check is whether the plan you are considering has an expiry date or not. The way this works is quite straight-forward – many life insurance plans will expire on a given date. In some cases this might be based on a set number of years (for example 10 years), while in others it might be based on age (for example the plan might expire when you turn 65 or 70). Once the date or age is reached the life insurance policy will cease, and a new policy will require a brand-new application to be made.

This can cause a problem for one main reason - it’s common for people to develop health issues as they get older. Importantly this won’t affect your life insurance while it is in force (the insurer can’t cancel the cover because you develop a health ...
... issues or charge you a higher premium). However when your life insurance plan expires, you would need to make a brand new application if you wish to set up a new plan. This new plan will be based on your health at the time you apply – so if there are health issues these will be considered by the insurer, and they could affect the cost of your life insurance or even mean that you are not able to get insurance.

When you go to set up a life insurance policy, the insurance will require that you complete an application form. This will ask for details about your health, pastimes, family medical history etc, and based on this, the insurer will finilise the cost of your life insurance.

Often premiums will increase from the “standard” rates (this is called a life insurance premium “loading”). This increase can occur for many reasons – for example a dangerous hobby like mountaineering can lead to an increase. Also a person’s health can have a major effect on the cost of life insurance.

At the time you set up a Health Zealand policy you are required to provide a range of personal information. This will include details like your date of birth, smoking status, and health information, and will also include information on any “dangerous” hobbies that you have. The life insurance company will assess this information, and finalise the cost of your life insurance.

So, when you are setting up life insurance, it’s important to check the expiry date of the cover (a good plan will have no expiry date or an expiry at age 100). This will help to make sure that the life insurance can remain in place for as long as you need it.
