Change In Name After Marriage
Wedding is said to be the most imperative decision in the life of a human being. There are many believes attached with this decision and according to Hindu mythology, it is the purest and the longest bond, which a man and a woman ties. The Indian bride and groom are supposed to serve their marriage for the seven lives, after they get married. Though, it’s the starting of a new life, for both the bride and groom, but bride specifically experiences the majority of the changes. These changes are not only in terms of her lifestyle or adjustments according to her new house, but her whole identity changes.
In most of the Indian marriages, the surname of the bride changes, which she has been carrying since birth. There are barely any alterations, which a groom has to go through after wedding, other than the basic responsibilities of running and taking care of his own family. But, in case of bride, she has to adopt a number of changes and modify herself, to keep her new family happy and live a hurdle free life. The change in the surname is the first and the foremost identification, ...
... which makes the bride realise that she is now a part of a new family and has the responsibility of respectfully carrying the name of her husband’s family.
It has been ages, and has therefore become a culture, that Indian brides change their surname after marriage. But, now with the modernisation of the times and girls becoming more independent, many of the brides are reluctant to change their surname after marriage. A sudden change in the name, which the bride has been carrying since her birth, is truly a tough thing to swallow and should actually be an option for the bride. Though keeping same name is also not a justice to the groom and his family. A mid way, which has been adopted by the brides these days is that adding the in- law’s surname to the bride’s present name. This would not only keep the essence of her life alive, but would also respect the feelings of her new family. A large number of newlywed brides have now-a-days, started practising this and are very happily respecting the values of both the families.
All these changes and adaption of the new values of the society, depends entirely on the understanding the bride and groom have between each other. It also depends on the fact, how moderate the new family of the bride is and whether they allow her to do the same. The bride should always act according to the wishes of her in-laws; this also does not mean that she is not allowed to live her life freely. But, it should be kept in mind that any of the acts done by the bride, does not lead to any disputes in future. The thinking and the family values of the groom are to play a significant role in this and according to the Indian culture, the bride is supposed to abide by the rules of her family. In fact, today, there are many husbands and wives who hyphenate their names, which proves the fact that bride and groom holds equal status in marriage. This in a way also keeps the identity of both the bride and groom alive. Husbands who follows this, automatically earns lot of respect in the eyes of his wife, and is also a very lovable thing to do.
The bond of marriage anyways is based on the wheels of love, care, understanding and support, all of which if kept intact, can add everlasting happiness and prosperity in the married life of bride and groom.
