Architecture as art has existed for many thousands of years, yet still today it will take on new shapes and new forms to push boundaries beyond what was ever considered possible. What follows is just a small selection of what the world boasts with regards to architectural beauty.

Rome - The Capital of Italy, Rome is a city that boasts a spectacular selection of architectural achievements dating back to thousands of years, and was one of the founding cities of Western Civilisation. Attracting around 7 million tourists each year, the city is a fascinating example of human achievement and is still as impressive today as it ever has been. About the most popular attractions when it comes to architecture is the Colosseum which is an amphitheatre dating back thousands of years that was designed and built to hold up to 60,000 spectators. This bit of architecture is a typical piece of the work from the Romans, it still stands today and like many structures in Rome it's a great piece of history.

The Taj Mahal - An Islamic tomb located in Agra, India, the Taj Mahal is inarguably an image of great beauty, and ...
... for obvious reasons is amongst the most visited landmarks by tourists visiting the region.

The Burj Khalifa - This is a modern architectural creation, only completed in January just gone in Dubai, and it is the tallest building on record. At 2,717 feet, it is 1,000 feet taller compared to the previous record holder, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan. Should you go down the stairs of the entire building it could take around 45 minutes.

The Pyramids - The Pyramids were built as tombs for Egypt’s Pharaohs (their kings). According to the Egyptian Travel Authority, Egypt boasts around 8 million visitors to the Pyramids every year. The architectural design of the Pyramids is seldom seen today, except when constructing replicas as can be observed in Las Vagas, so much of the appeal will be as a result of their individuality. The largest of the Pyramids will be the Pyramid of Khufa located in Giza. This took a huge number of people around 23 years to construct and complete.

Cathedrals - Cathedrals all boast elements of architectural excellence and each and every cathedral is an impressive demonstration of great architecture. Possibly the largest of these religious buildings will be the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine found in New York, but deciding which is the most impressive will no doubt be down to personal preference. The building of a Cathedral is a long and laborious process; for instance, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris took nearly two centuries to complete.

The Eiffel Tower - Is probably one of the most famous and recognizable architectural structures globally, but possibly one of the more straightforward to actually build, it was created as part of the World's Fair back in 1889. The tower has since gathered associations with the ideals of ingenuity, progress and beauty, and it has become a symbol of the city of Paris itself.

The Statue of Liberty - Possibly the most recognised statue in the world, the Statue of Liberty symbolizes the alliance between France and the United States that established during the American Revolution.
