Chicago Blackhawks Face Montreal Canadiens In 1973 Stanley Cup Final

The 1972 Stanley Cup Playoffs featured 8 of the top teams in the NHL. The teams played in a regular season of 78 games and the top 4 teams from the East and West Divisions would play to see which team was the best team in the league.
The teams representing the East Division included the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres. The Canadiens were on top of the division with a stellar record of 52-10-16 on the season. The Bruins were in second with a 51-22-5 record. The Rangers were in 3rd at 47-23-8 and the Sabres rounded off the group with a record of 37-27-14 on the year.
The East Division was much better than the West Division in the regular season as 3 of the teams in the East Division finished the season with better records than anyone in the West. The teams that qualified from the West Division were the Chicago Blachawks, Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars and St. Louis Blues.
The Blackhawks led the way with a 42-27-9 record in the regular season. The Flyers and North Stars finished the season with identical record of 37-30-11. The Flyers were awarded the 2nd ...
... seed. The Blues were the last team to make it from the West Division and finished at 32-42-12.
The Canadiens and Sabres squared off in the first round in what was a pretty good series. The Sabres put forth all that they had and managed to take away two games from the Canadiens. The Canadiens ultimately advanced, winning the series 4 games to 2.
The Flyers and the North Stars had a similar battle in the first round of the playoffs. The North Stars simply did not have enough and the Flyers managed to put away the series in 6 games, winning the series 4 games to 2. This meant that the Canadiens and Flyers would square off in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
The Black Hawks and St. Louis Blues played in the first round of the other half of the bracket. The Black Hawks were far superior and the Blues only managed to sneak away with one win in the series, giving the Black Hawks a 4-1 series victory.
The Bruins and Rangers had an interesting series as the Bruins were upset by the Rangers. Boston could not get anything going for the better part of the series and the Rangers managed to put the series away in 5 games. The Rangers would advance to play against the Black Hawks in the 2nd round.
The Canadiens had a solid first round and continued to play well in the 2nd round. The Flyers were really no match for the Canadiens and Montreal managed to end the series in just 5 games and advanced to play in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Many people thought that the Rangers would come in and win this series as the West Division was so inferior to the East Division. The Blackhawks came to the series ready to play and dominated the Rangers, winning the series 4-1.
The Blackhawks and Canadiens had a decent series, but it was clear from the start that the Canadiens would be the favorites to win. The Black Hawks gave a good effort, but fell in 6 games to the Stanley Cup Champion Montreal Canadiens.
