Some Techniques Used In Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a treatment for pain, injury and body function which relies on the concept of body mechanics. By manipulating the body, better function and feeling can be promoted throughout. Osteopathy is a manual medicine, working on muscles, joints, ligaments and tissues to improve systems of the body such as the musculoskeletal system, the circulatory system, the nervous system and the immune system.
Â
Osteopaths use a range of techniques to treat patients and provide treatments for back pain relief, neck pain relief, RSI, sciatica and other conditions.
Osteopathy is available throughout Australia, including in Osteopath Sydney Melbourne and Brisbane clinics.
Some of the techniques used by osteopaths include some of the following:
Â
Muscle Energy Techniques
Â
These techniques are often used to assist the nervous system to correct its "proprioceptive" information such as information about joint position and muscle tone. These techniques ...
... generally involve the patient stretching and relaxing muscles against a counterforce applied by the osteopath.
Â
Soft Tissue Techniques
Â
These techniques can include stretching, pressure and traction to the muscles and connective tissue around the spine to help with suppleness and motion
Â
The techniques can be aimed at moving tissue fluids (oedema) or relaxing tight muscles associated with somatic dysfunction.
Â
Manipulation
Â
Manipulative techniques involve a rapid thrust to a joint in an attempt to improve range of motion and reduce pain. Where performed properly, the joint itself is not taken beyond its anatomical range.
Â
Myofascial Release Techniques
Myofascia is the strong connective tissue spread throughout the whole body in a web from head to foot. Myofascia is prone to restriction in the same way that muscle tissue is. Restrictions in myofascia often manifest as joint restrictions and pain. Myofascial release techniques used by Osteopaths can be similar to soft tissue massage.
Â
Cranial Osteopathy
Â
Cranial osteopathy is a subtle form of osteopathic treatment aimed at encouraging the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body, including the head. Cranial Osteopathy was discovered by Dr William Garner Sutherland (1873-1954) who worked on the basis that the bony cranium (skull) is capable of respiratory motion or breath. Later research in osteopathy identified this motion as being present in all body tissues. Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel this very subtle, rhythmical motion. Â Improving dysfunctional cranial rhythmic impulses can improve the flow of cerebral spinal fluid and body function generally.
Osteopaths may have different specialities such as sports injuries, back pain relief, paediatrics or visceral osteopathy (treating the internal organs of the body). Cranial osteopathy embraces all of these specialties and is available in Australia, including in Osteopath Sydney Melbourne and Brisbane clinics.
