After the super success of James Cameron's Avatar, 2009 witnessed a boost in the number of 3D cinema screens. 2010 was the year of 3D TV, with Sky announcing a dedicated 3D channel and Samsung winning the race by releasing the first 3D LED TV sets thus bringing a revolution in the home viewing experience. Come 2011 and 3D TV has finally a reality in living rooms with all the major names launching their 3D TV models. Then came Panasonic unveiled 3D television for home use in Japan. And in the queue were Sony, Toshiba and Sharp.

2010 was indeed a bumper year for 3 dimensional TV but were the consumers ready to sit down to watch TV in goggles and to shell out extra bucks for blu-ray and other devices? Let's see what the figures say! According to USA Today, Samsung sold 2 million 3D television sets in 2010. In 2011, the South Korean company expects the sale to be around 10 million 3D TV sets. The South Korean electronics giant LG is expecting to sell 5 million 3D TVs in 2011. Panasonic said that its 3D TV sets have already surpassed HD sales. This is a significant milestone. It means we have already surpassed what ...
... I call the laserdisc threshold. We have already taken 3D from geekdom to an early mass market. Compare this to the rollout of HD TV. The industry sold less than half a million HD sets in five years. the chief technology officer of Panasonic, EisukeTsuyuzaki told TechRadar.

There were many who believed that the lack of 3D programming would hamper the sales of 3D TVs. But now with so many dedicated 3D channels coming up the craze for 3D TVs is slated to increase. Recently Comcast launched a 24 hour 3D channel called Xfinity 3D with 3D broadcasts of the Tim Horton's NHL Heritage Classic 2011 hockey game and a Kings of Leon concert.

There's also been a rise of 3D in the adult content realm. In January 2011, Penthouse launched an all-new channel called Penthouse 3D that will let viewers see pornography in three dimensions. Now, Hustler is expected to launch a new adult channel that will include both HD and 3D content. It's to be noted that 3D has been extensively adopted for the horror genre; do these flicks Friday the 13th Part 3, My Bloody Valentine and the Silent Madness ring a bell?
