Raising a puppy can be an exciting and satisfying experience. It can also result in frustration if some guidelines aren't adhered to or certain aspects of duty are overlooked.
The puppies in their young days are much playful and like to investigate the objects by touching, chewing and tasting them. Hence, it is necessary for you to take special care of them. There are number of things you can do to help the puppies and take proper care of them when they are newly bought. Proper care in younger days can lead them to a happy and healthier life.
Following are some pet care tips that should be followed before bringing your puppy home.
Puppy Proof Your Home:
Puppies are playful and investigate the objects by chewing and tasting them. It is possibility that they can swallow the dangerous items.
Keep the dangerous items away from the reach of puppies.
For example, string, ribbon, yarn, paper clips, eraser, staples, coins, small board game pieces, plastic bags, etc.
Keep the medicine bottles and other chemicals away.
Keep away the toxic ...
... house plants like philodendron, poinsettia and toxic garden plants like lily, daffodil, tomato, etc. above the reach of puppies.
Keeping Your Puppy Safe:
Provide pet safe toys to keep your puppy occupied.
Store household chemicals and poisons in locked cabinet.
Use covered trashcans in-house and garage.
Keep toilet lids down so that your puppy doesn't fall in or drink from the bowl.
Keep kitchen counter-tops clean of food items to reduce temptation.
Keep electrical cables and wires out of sight of puppies.
Keep your dog indoors and safe from other dogs and extreme weather conditions.
Puppy Care Tips:
Following points should be considered while taking care of your newly bought puppy.
Environment:
There are three main factors to be considered when preparing an environment for your puppy.
1. Comfort: The environment provided for the puppy should be comfortable and playful. Create a comfortable and warm bed for puppy to sleep.
2. Safety: Remove anything that can be harmful to your puppy from its environment.
3. Amusement: Give lots of toys and things to your puppy to play with. This is important when you are unable to spend time with puppy.
Feeding:
As puppies are in growing stage, they need a balanced diet for proper and healthy growth. There are foods available in market specially made for puppies that include all the necessary nutrients that puppy needs. Some of the good foods for puppies are
Milk
Chicken
Oatmeal
Vegetables
Boiled rice
Carrots
Cheese
Puppies should be fed on the same time and place everyday. They need four meals a day until they are four months old. After that they will require three meals a day until eight months and then two meals until twelve months. After that they will require just one meal a day.
Vaccination:
Puppies need to be vaccinated at about six to nine weeks of age. A veterinary surgeon can tell you the best time for your puppy to be vaccinated. After the initial vaccination, the booster vaccination needs to be given. This is given three weeks after the initial vaccination.
At the time of vaccination, ask your vet to perform a routine check-up and discuss any puppy health concerns with him/her.
Puppies are born with ring worms. They need to be wormed at the age of two weeks. When the puppies have a lot of worms, they may display the following symptoms.
Weight Loss
Eating more than usual
Pot belly
Worms in Fetus
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Exercise:
Exercise is required for the puppies to become healthy and stay happy. During the young age, exercise can be done at home, but as the puppy gets older, it will need to be walked. Exercise can be done by playing with your dog, throwing ball at him and otherwise keeping him active. Talk to your vet for the best time and type of exercise for your puppy.
Training Your Puppy:
Training of puppy can be started when it is five weeks old. Puppies can be trained by putting then in a good place after they finish eating. When they go in right place, reward them with lots of affection and praise.
Taking the right care of your puppy is crucial. They need to be brought up in the right environment and given proper puppy care. The best thing is to spend some time in thinking about the puppy care for your new puppy.
