Tom Seaver was one of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game. He had a long career that led to the Hall of Fame. During his career he played for four separate teams.

Seaver was born in 1944 in Fresno, California. He grew up in Fresno and played multiple sports at a high level for Fresno High School. He was particularly good at basketball and baseball. He was named an All-City basketball player, but still decided to play baseball in college.

Seaver played for the University of Southern California and had a lot of success for the Trojan. While pitching for the Trojans he racked a 10-2 record in his sophomore season and gained the attention of several Major League Baseball teams. He was ultimately drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 10th round.

The Dodgers refused to give Seaver the money that he demanded and he was not signed by the Dodgers. The Braves proceeded to pay him, but his college season had already begun and his contract was ruled void by Major League Baseball. He was also ruled ineligible for college baseball because he signed a contract.

After appealing to baseball's ...
... commissioner he was granted the opportunity to sign another contract and the Mets ultimately won his signing rights. While the Mets were fortunate to stumble upon him, he ended up being the best pitcher in the history of their franchise.

Seaver came out firing for the Mets and won the Rookie of the Year in his debut season. While the Mets were terrible in his Rookie season, the young pitcher still managed to win 16 games and threw 18 complete games. He was also named an All-Star for that season.

Seaver continued his success with the Mets in subsequent seasons and actually managed to win the Cy Young award in 1969 for the Mets. He won 25 games and was a key ingredient in the formula that led to the success of the Mets in that season. Seaver helped the Mets win the first World Series in the history of their franchise with some solid games in the playoffs. That season Seaver was also the runner-up for the MVP award and he was named the top athlete of the year by several publications.

That Cy Young was the first of three that he would win during his career. The other two Cy Young awards came while he was still with the Mets, winning in 1973 and 1975. Over the course of his career he would make the all-star team 12 times. Amazingly he managed to qualify for the All-Star team 10 times in the 11 seasons that he pitched for the Mets.

After leaving the Mets he continued to serve as a top-notch pitcher for the Reds, making the All-Star team 2 more times with the Reds in 1978 and 1981.

Seaver returned to the Mets in 1983 for a season and then pitched a few more seasons with the White Sox and Red Sox before ending his career. He was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992, receiving votes from 98.8 percent of the voters on the first ballot.
