The Sherlock Holmes Tour London
A Sherlock Holmes tour shouldn't be missed by anyone who enjoys the history of this character and movie-making. There have been some historic films made in the UK and the gripping stories written by Scottish author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, about this famous detective and his side-kick, Doctor John Watson, are right at the top of the list.
Take a 3-hour excursion in an air conditioned luxury mini-coach and visit all the locations where these famous movies were made, the first of which premiered in the 1930s. Of note are the 221b Baker Street Museum, the Pentonville Prison, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's office. Along the way, you can get off the coach to see the sets up close, take photos, and enjoy a drink at the Northumberland Arms.
To get into the mood, many tourists dress up as the master sleuth, so feel free to do the same. To add to the fun, there's a trivia quiz, so brush up your knowledge about the characters and the different films. You will visit the building where Watson and Holmes met in 'A Study in Scarlet' which was released in 1933. See the notorious crypt scene when the two detectives foiled ...
... Lord Blackwood.
The 221b Baker Street Museum will have you engrossed and is possibly the highlight of the tour. This is where the two detectives lived from 1881 to 1904. The 1815 building has been listed by the government to protect its cultural and architectural heritage. The interior has been meticulously maintained as described by Conan Doyle.
The study that overlooks Baker Street has been used in so many movies. Here, visitors can sit in the illustrious detective's chair next to the fireplace and pose for pictures. You can also see his bedroom that adjoins the study. It houses a host of his personal possessions like his famous deerstalker hat, the calabash pipe, his magnifying glass, notebook, chemistry equipment, his pipe and violin, as well as his favorite Persian slippers.
Doctor Watson's room is on the second floor, while Mrs Hudson's is at the front of the building. Mrs Hudson was the landlady who did household chores and cooked meals for her famous tenants. On display is Doctor Watson's diary which contains extracts and hand-written notes from 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.
Just when you think this Sherlock Holmes tour can't get any more exciting, wait and see what awaits you on the third floor. There is an exhibition room with a whole scene of new life-size wax models. You can stand right next to the man himself while he is talking to his friend, Professor Moriarty, and pose for photograph.
