Jack the ripper is the name given to the unidentified serial killer who murderered women in areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The actual name 'Jack the Ripper' came about from a letter written by someone who claimed to be the murderer which is widely believed to have been a hoax. Other nicknames which were used for the killer at the time were "The Whitechapel Murderer" and "Leather Apron".

There is uncertainty as to how many victims were killed by this same person, but there have been eleven separate murders, stretching from 3 April 1888 to 13 February 1891. Most of the Rippers victims where female prostitutes from the poor areas on Whitechapel in London. All of their throats were cut before they were mutilated and in some case internal organs removed. This led police to believe the murderer had surgical knowledge. Because these murders where never solved the legends surrounding them became folklore and pseudo history.

The term "ripperology" came about to describe the study and analysis of the Ripper murder cases. Since the 1800's there have been well over one hundred theories ...
... about the Ripper's identity and the murders have inspired multiple works of fiction in both books and movies. There was a recent BBC TV mini series called Whitechapel which was based on the unsolved murders.

There is a Jack the Ripper tour which you can go on in London for those fascinated with these unsolved murders. The walking tour lasts for 2 ½ hours and explores the historical background of the Whitechapel murders. You get to walk the same streets of the unfortunate women who lost their lives to this sick murderer. Explore the dark passages and alleys that the murderer used which still looks the same today. You get to remember the tragic lives of those women who had friends and loved ones, who struggled daily to survive with life after the murders. You can also go on private tours for smaller groups if that suits you more and each tour is conducted in the early evening which gives an eerily feeling to the tour. The tour also takes you to the locations used in the mini-series Whitechapel.
