Family Dinner Or The World Tallest Building?
Like it or not, you must do projects in your life. Either for personnel purposes or for your job, you cannot escape working on delivering some kind of an output (product) in a set time frame and with limited resources. However, the main question is: do you use Project Management to manage your projects?
The majority of people manage their projects on a day-to-day basis with little or no application of project management tools and techniques. The major reason behind this is the complexity that had grown into project management. However, recently there are many calls to simplify the science of project management to allow every one to use its tools and methods. So, whether you plan on building the word tallest building or just arranging for a family dinner you can use project management. One example of people who call for such simplicity is Abdulla Alkuwaiti who recently published a book called The Project Book. In his book he presents an easy to follow framework to allow for people to create a project plan for their projects easily and effectively. The framework is based on 23 templates that are arranged in one ...
... page each to be filled by the project manager/team. For example, after an idea is generated to start a project (for example to arrange for a family dinner) there is a template called feasibility study to be filled. After filling the first template, the remaining templates will be filled one after the other in sequence to build a full and workable project plan.
Using project management in running projects has clear advantages. Many experts added to this science over the years from their hands on experience in managing projects. For example, by using project management you will be able to use tools to estimate the actual time and money needed to run your projects. To do such estimation you will need to use tools like parametric estimation. The name of the tools just mentioned might seem complex, but actually it is fairly easy to use and depends on using information you can obtain very easily by merely thinking about them. In addition, a very strong tool that project management will introduce to you is the one of risk management. In risk management you will be able to identify risks (i.e. bad events that can produce an unfavorable outcome to your project). Examples of such outcomes might be delay in preparing your family dinner or worse having it burned. Risk management is fairly straight forward an intuitive to use. First, you need to think of possible risks to our project which is called risk identification. Then you need to evaluate these risks and think if they have real potential to actually occur and effect your project. Finally you will be able to use among different strategies to control these risks.
The benefits of risk management are tremendous and should not be ignored. As mentioned in the article, many people are calling to simplify the science of project management in an effort to bring it closer to the mass of people. If you would like to achieve more success in your projects you should read more about project management and you will be amazed at how easy it is to apply its tools and techniques.
