The Rose Bowl is known for featuring a game at the end of each college football season that includes two of the very best teams in the nation. The Rose Bowl is one of the major bowl games that is often used to determine who the national champion of college football will be. Other major bowl games that are used to determine the national champion include the Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl.

The game in 1972 would not feature the top teams in the league vying for a national championship, but it would feature two teams within the top levels of college football squaring off. The Stanford Indians would take on the Michigan Wolverines.

Coming into the game the Wolverines were 11-0 on the season and they were voted the 4th best team in the nation in the AP and Coaches polls. The Stanford Indians had a much poorer record on the season at 8-3, but they were still ranked as the 16th best team in the nation according to the AP and Coaches polls.

The Rose Bowl is played in Pasadena, California. This meant that Stanford would have somewhat of a home field advantage as they were from California. Despite the fact ...
... that Stanford would have somewhat of a home field advantage, the Wolverines were the 10.5 point favorites entering the game. The game was heavily attended as there were more than 103 thousand people in the stands for the competition between these two great teams.

The game was not the offensive onslaught that many people hoped for. While Michigan was expected to jump out to a big lead early, they were unable to get going on the offensive side of the field. While their offense was sputtering, they were still playing excellent football on the defensive side of the field. They would not allow a point to Stanford in the first or second quarters of play.

Stanford managed to hold Michigan scoreless in the first quarter, but the Wolverines managed to put a field goal on the board in the 2nd quarter from 30 yards out. This would give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter featured more defensive battles as the Wolverines and Indians continued to play solid on that side of the ball. This time the Indians managed to put some points on the board with a 42 yard field goal. This would tie the game. The Wolverines were unable to score in the quarter.

The 4th quarter is when each team started to get going offensively. The Wolverines finally managed to put the ball in the end zone as Fritz Seyferth ran for a 1 yard touchdown. This put the Wolverines up 10-3.

Stanford was quick to respond and put up a touchdown of their own on the board with a 24 yard run from Jackie Brown. This would tie the game 10-10.

The Wolverines came up big on defense once again as their defense tackled Jim Ferguson in the end zone for a safety to go up 2 points with 3 minutes left in the game.

Stanford responded with a scoring drive and kicked a field goal through the uprights with 12 seconds left in the game to upset the Wolverines.
