Indian Student Parliament Resolutions
The Indian Student Council's First Student parliament (Bhartiya Chhatra Sansad), organized in Maharashtra Institute of Technology's School of Government (MITSOG), in Pune, on Jan 12-14, 2011, is a bold step towards voicing Indian youth's concerns over wide issues touching Indian lives. Addressing sensitive themes like India Vs Bharat, Women's Empowerment, Globalization and Opportunities for Youth, Environment, Fight against Terrorism, Understanding Naxalism etc., it summoned students, political leaders, environmentalists, workers and media on the same platform, working towards a common goal. The objective was to achieve the involvement of youth in the country's decision-making process. The next Indian Student Parliament to be held in 2012, in Mumbai, Nagpur or Aurangabad will be announced by 1st week of April.
Several resolutions were taken in eleven sessions, followed by interactive talks between the leaders and participants and a voting round on each resolution. The first resolution was for the facilitation of scholarships and stipends to graduate and postgraduate students from economically weak sections, by all State ...
... Governments. This will ensure that those with a good intellectual potential are not deterred from pursuing a healthy education because of their economic backwardness. The second resolution was for setting up of vocational training institutes in about 200 Naxalite affected areas for training of local youth by the State Governments, funded by Central Government. Conduction of two workshops relating to the RTI, each year, by the Block Development Officer for student leaders across the country to sensitize them about citizen's rights and responsibilities and for their enhanced participation in the country's administration was also resolved. Others include provision of free hostel facility for graduate and post graduate students from economically weaker sections, commitment from each youth for plantation and protection of at least one tree in a lifetime, and conduction of self-defense training for all female students by NCC.
In view of the rapidly evolving industrial trends, and the need of a better curriculum, it was also resolved that a more practical and job oriented curriculum at the graduate and postgraduate level should be provided. Provision of one-month training program on capacity building for youth in urban slums, by the Higher and Technical Education Ministry in each state to improve quality of laborers and unskilled workers was also voted for. Elected representatives of the student parliament will also supervise the training programs. Elections should be conducted for the constitution of Student councils in all states for selection of members for the student parliament. Resolutions for conduction of a computer literacy workshop every six months in each village, by state funded educational and technical institutions and facilitation of inter-state study tours annually at concessional fares for college students, by ministry of Railways, Government of India and State Transport Department were also put forth.
Student leaders, through their mobile phones, voted for these resolutions and the passed ones were sent to the HRD ministry, the planning commission and all policy-making bodies in India. The higher and technical education ministry of Maharashtra was the chief patron of the event.
