Stop Smoking Cigarettes
Whether you have been smoking for just a few weeks or for decades, learning how to stop smoking cigarettes can seem almost impossible. Smoking is, without a doubt, one of the most addictive habits out there, and even those with a great deal of will power and motivation can have an extremely difficult time kicking the habit. While it is difficult, many smokers do successfully quit smoking cigarettes each year, and you can do so too. In order to increase one's chances of success, there are a few things that they must do to keep themselves motivated throughout the process.
In order to quick smoking, a smoker needs to want to do so for themselves. Though it may sound obvious, until you find that your motivation to stop is coming from within, you will never be able to stop entirely. To keep your motivation up, consider making a list of all the reasons why you want to quit. You can include specifics about improving your health, saving money, or not having the distraction of needing a cigarette fix in your life any more. The more specific the items on your list are, the more likely it is that you will stick to your quitting ...
... plan.
There will be some physical withdrawal symptoms from quitting, but they will not last long. To ensure that you are cutting out this substance entirely, you should also stop smoking cigars when you are trying to cut your dependence on cigarettes as well. This will get the nicotine and other chemicals out of your bloodstream more quickly and will reduce the physical dependence that you feel. For the first few days, you may be irritable and even experiencing some nausea, but this should pass quite quickly.
The real thing that trips many people up when quitting cigarettes is the psychological withdrawal that occurs. For many smokers, smoking has become a part of their identity, and there are a number of triggers throughout the day which must be dealt with. The best way to reduce the power of these triggers is to change your routine as much as possible. For some, this means avoiding bars for a while. For others, it may mean reducing the amount of time spent with fellow smokers. These changes do not need to be permanent, but temporarily avoiding this addiction triggers will make the process of quitting that much easier.
Reward yourself for meeting your goals. When you are first outlining your plan for quitting cigarettes, set up a few milestone dates on which you will earn a reward if you are still smoke free. These rewards may be a dinner out at a restaurant that you love, a new pair of shoes or DVD, or even just a personal day off work. Whatever you choose, having these concrete rewards in place will give you something to look forward to.
Regardless of how long you have been smoking, it is always possible to stop and enjoy the health benefits that come with quitting. Though it is not easy, those who figure out how to stop smoking cigarettes will feel better, have more energy and save tons of money each year.
