Question: How can you disconnect the software from the hardware? Answer: Using a virtual server. After the server virtualization software is installed on your physical server a single server can handle the accommodation of several servers. These virtual servers will then act as a physical server, but is decoupled from the hardware on the physical server. Often when you use a physical server you're not utilizing its full potential. It runs very well but you've invested a lot more money than you needed. When you use a virtual server you can increase the utilization of the physical server, which in turn, obviously, results in the sharp decline of the costs of hardware and maintenance. Area and energy requirements also take a beneficial dip.

Also, the virtualization increases the scalable flexibility. As the virtual server is now a separate entity from the hardware, it's much easier to adjust and update it without having to invest in new hardware and physically upgrading the server. If you need more RAM, CPU or hard disk space it's just a matter of adjusting some settings and ...
... you're good to go. The process of disaster recovery also gets a lot simpler. Since a virtual server usually consists of a single file on a storage somewhere, it's as easy as recovering a single file to get it back to a working state. No more tedious re-installations of the operating system on the physical server.

Furthermore, it becomes possible to analyze the working of varies operating systems and software without disturbing the system running the virtualization software. It's as easy as creating a new virtual server and installing the operating system of your likings, test it, and if it doesn't suit your needs, you can remove it and install a different one. This means that virtualization speeds up the process of deployment, because you can create templates of all your favorite operating systems and deploy it in the matter of seconds. On the flip side, when you have a lot of virtual server hosting running on the same physical machine, and if a hardware failure occurs, you affect all the virtual servers and not just the physical one.

To cure this, as mentioned above, you setup a good backup architecture or you create a cluster of physical servers. This means that you get high availability, because if one physical server fails, and the storage is shared between all the physical servers, you can transfer the virtual server to a different physical server without the user even noticing that anything happened. Contrary to what is perceived from the looks of it, server virtualizations inner workings are a complex process. Getting your hands at apt tools and expertise for handling virtual environment is the most reliable method of filling in these gaps. Once you have the best tools and expertise available, you can rest assured that your virtual server will work perfectly well.
