Many people whose daily work depends in part on servers and who come into contact with servers and the networks they run everyday do not even know what servers are or do. This is because their work does not require them to know what servers are, only that they make use of the services provided by servers. It is in the best interest of anyone whose work depends on servers to have at least some idea of what they are and what they do, however, in case something should happen to the servers and they require maintenance or repair. Of course, knowledge of servers is also valuable in itself simply as part of the learning process that should never stop during your lifetime.

The purpose of servers is relatively simple to understand, and if you understand what a computer is then you more or less know what a server is as well. The difference between servers and computers, however, is that servers are more specialized than computers are. Computers are built to serve general purposes, whether it be to edit documents, watch videos, listen to music, surf the internet, or any of a hundred other things. A server, however, is purpose built ...
... to run specific software packages that provide functionality and utility to other servers and computers.

As they are built to perform a specific function, the hardware found in a server is somewhat different from that found in a regular computer. The processor chips and hard drives used in both are similar, but there the similarity ends, for a computer also contains a variety of other hardware such as a DVD drive, input and output ports for keyboards, mice and monitors, and a graphics card. A server, however, usually has none of these other things, because they are simply not necessary for it to perform its function.

The main function of a server is to provide constant access for multiple computers to the same store of information, and to facilitate communication between those multiple computers. It accomplishes this by acting as a hub, with all of the computers connected to the server, and it then reroutes and directs digital traffic as it has to, allowing computers on the network to send messages to one another, send and receive files, and so on.

Rackmount servers are a particular type of server, and are characterized by their shape and size. There are also rackmount custom servers, that are identical in shape and size to regular rackmount servers but have customizable internal hardware options. Rackmount servers are flat and compact, and their main selling point is their small size compared to other servers, making them easy to move around and store, and making it possible to stack multiple servers on the same rack, hence the name rackmount.

Rackmount custom servers are also gaining in popularity, as many online websites have found ways to cut the costs of purchasing rackmount custom servers so much so that it is no more expensive to purchase rackmount custom servers than it is to purchase regular rackmount servers.
