What is an overhead crane? An overhead crane, or bridge crane, is a type of crane where the hook portion can run the length of a horizontal beam. Unlike construction cranes, this type of equipment is usually a permanent fixture. Overhead cranes are especially helpful in environments where items of great weight and size need to be moved. If these items cannot be moved safely by forklift or conveyer belt, an overhead crane could be a great alternative. Factories for automobiles, welders, engines, and airplanes all make use of overhead cranes, although their usage is not limited to assembly lines only. Overhead cranes can also be useful in moving heavy machinery for maintenance, or in an outdoor environment for loading and unloading train boxcars. Unlike using a forklift, with an overhead crane there is no need to clear aisles to move a load from one location to another. Overhead cranes are also safer because there is no risk of them overturning, and they can be fitted with anti-collision devices to keep them from crashing into other objects.
