Website directories like any other directory gives you the address or ‘link' to it's contents. A telephone directory gives you the name and telephone number of the people listed in the directory and a web directory gives you links to the various websites listed in it. These websites are listed under various categories. While searching for information on a particular subject or category you click on it and the websites listed under it will be displayed along with their respective links.

These web or internet directories are considered more efficient than search engines because they are organised manually. Search engines have spiders or crawlers that automatically update websites to an engine whereas directories are maintained manually by editors who check each website before approving it to be added to their site. Viewers mostly prefer searching for sites on directories as the search is more productive, search engines are not sorted under categories and therefore it is time consuming.

Website directories are very useful as they have less listings compared to engines and are also categorised under different headings. Most directories use paid-listing systems which further filters the entries and cuts down bulk entries.

The approval system takes a little time as it's done manually and not all sites meet the criteria of the various directories. However the end result is quality not just quantity.

When the lists are small sites have a better chance of being viewed, engines list thousands of sites on unending pages and only 7% of viewers search beyond the third page thus if you're not listed on the top you're as good as not listed!

Quality search is what internet directories are used for, and they are becoming more popular as the number of sites on the world wide web are increasing, which is every second.
