Although officially the city of Cape Coral was incorporated in 1970, there are some documents that the city is older than that. The oldest one would have to be a phone book that was published in 1961. Before the city was incorporated, all of the streets carried only names, without numbers.

The Cape Coral Gardens at the Rose Gardens was opened back in 1964. There you will find some of the most beautiful rose gardens in the city along with lush tropical plants and a replica of a Spanish galleon, the Waltzing Waters fountain and a porpoise show. Right at the entrance there is a replica of the Iwo Jima statue, which has since been moved to its home near Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve.

The City Hall of Cape Coral has evolved in direct proportions with the city during the last decades. It was housed in three different buildings over its history. The Police Department was housed right in the building that was City Hall for about 30 years, but recently they got their own building just like any respectable Police Department should have.

If you didn't know, the entire city started at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. ...
... The club itself was opened in 1958 and sports a beautiful landscaping, a community pool, a fisher pier and a sandy beach. It is without any doubt one of the most popular venues in the city for weddings, picnics and parties. In the past, there was the Teen Club where each teen that belonged got a key to the building and the interesting thing is that they didn't allow any adults.

We can't talk about Cape Coral without mentioning the extensive canal systems and the close proximity to the Caloosahatchee River that gathers every year many visitors. The city has more than 400 miles of canals which is more than Venice, Italy.

In its early years of existence, the city was mostly known as a community with many retired residents. However, this situation has changed during the 90s with the boom of the construction and the population, bringing more and younger families as well as professionals. According to the latest demographical studies, 20% of the populations are seasonal residents.

In the present, Cape Coral is the home of many businesses, restaurants, retail on one of its most important arteries: Cape Coral Parkway - Del Prado Boulevard - Santa Barbara Boulevard - Pine Island Road.

Cape Coral is the second largest city in Florida and has an area of 120 square miles and a population of 162,852 as of 2009, making it the most populous city between Tampa and Miami. According to the projects made for 2014, the city will have a population of 203,500 people, 58,060 families and about 80,598 households.

As far as the real estate aspect is concerned, as of April 23, 2009, the city is listed number 3 out of 25 for the highest foreclosure cities in the United States. At the end of 2009, a new home could have been bought for less than $80,000.
