Microsoft 2003 & earlier versions limit the size of an MS Outlook PST file to 2GB. When th size of PST file exceeds 2GB, it starts to behave abnormally and you will not be able to access the important data inside it. This scenario is generally referred as an oversized PST file problem. Large sized PST files are very difficult to handle and access and lowers down the speed of the Outlook considerably and ultimately leads to corruption of Outlook. PST files 2GB and above in size are more prone to corruption. MS Outlook has an in-built utlity Scanpst.exe which repairs corrupt or damaged MS Outlook PST files. But this tool works good, only when corruption level is low. When PST file corruption is high, then Outlook users need to opt for a third party PST File Splitter software that can Split Large PST File into many small sized PST files and enable the easy access to important data inside it.

To illustrate above problem consider the following example: Suppose you are using Outlook 2003 to manage your important mails and when you try to send a mail through your Outlook, a following error message shows on the screen:

Task ...
... 'Microsoft Exchange Server - Receiving' reported error (0x8004060C): 'Unknown Error 0x8004060C'

As long as you receive the above error message, you will not be able to send important mails from your Outlook 2003. In addition to this you also cannot check your mails on getting this error.

Cause:

The reason for the occurrence of the above error message is oversized Outlook PST file ie PST file is going to exceed 2GB file size limit.

Resolution:

In order to resolve the above error message following stated solutions can be adopted:

Solution 1: Make deletion of those mails or objects that are of no use and also empty up the Deleted Items folder.

Solution 2: You can also try to Compact PST File and reduce its size below 2GB.

Solution 3: PST Archiving can be tried.

However even after trying the above solutions doesn't solve the problem, then Outlook users must go for an effective Split PST Files software. The software Split Outlook PST into many small PST files of size less than 2GB and hence save it from corruption. Many tools are available in the market that are specifically designed and developed to serve purpose of splitting an oversized Outlook PST file. Stellar Phoenix PST File Splitter v2.0 is one such software.
