There are many women who love the look of antique engagement rings. There is just something to be said for the classic and the traditional. While modern styles are quite popular today, the antique engagement rings of the past are certainly well worth a look, too. Many of the best jewelry designers today are focusing more on recreating the looks from the past than trying to reinvent the wheel.
True antique engagement rings are somewhat hard to find. Many families are not selling them today, choosing instead to pass them on to children and grandchildren. The craftsmanship so evident in these rings is often exceptional and that demands hefty prices for the rings that do make it to the market. Unless you are dedicated to finding an antique ring, you may find that custom made engagement ring, with an antique influence will better suit your needs and your budget.
There are really four basic types of antique engagement rings, each quite discernable depending upon the era in which it was made. The 1800s brought the Victorian era of jewelry and these are probably the hardest to find today. With a style as timeless as diamond ...
... studs, yellow and rose gold stood for purity and romance. Diamonds were often smaller in carat size, but there were often several rows of these beautiful stones.
The Edwardian era saw the influx of platinum to the jewelry scene, as well as the most intricate settings. From 1900 to 1920, the settings often has filigree designs or lacy details. Colored diamonds began to appear, with rose being the most common. The Art Deco era would completely change the way that people thought of engagement rings, as these designs were very symmetrical or geometric in shape and appearance. Brightly colored gemstones were often used in place of diamonds. These rings were a far cry from the soft designs of the Edwardian era. The Art Décor period of jewelry, including diamond studs, was between 1920 and 1945.
The Vintage Retro era saw the influx of yellow and white gold. This was due to the need for platinum for the war effort. These choices in precious metals continue to be quite popular today, as platinum is very expensive. Vintage Retro rings resemble Art Deco rings, but were usually much more substantial, even bulky. This was also the era when larger diamond studs became popular, as many women before this time preferred a more dainty look.
While diamond studs will never go out of style, neither will antique engagement rings. There is just something to be said for their timeless beauty and quite elegance, even with the later designs. If you love the look of this style of jewelry, then it's quite easy to find it. Many companies now carry several styles of antique jewelry and you may be able to easily find exactly what you are looking for. You may even be able to save enough to get your lovely lady a new pair of diamond studs to go with her beautiful new ring.
