You may be wondering how the new Google real-time search and SEO are related. Well, they are connected in a big way. Basically, real-time search is providing users with up to the minute information about the topics they want to know about. This is pushing businesses that don’t have social media accounts further down Google’s search index, and basically making their company’s online campaigns obsolete.

Google’s real-time search integrates Twitter and other social media into their search index. So, if you search for something general, like “dogs” you’ll not only get links to your local Humane Society, but also up to the second updates and Tweets from social media users, like recently posted blogs about keeping your pets safe and warm during the cold weather.

Google has also integrated the real-time feature into their Google alerts. That means if someone Tweets about a subject you’re watching, like the NFL playoffs, you’ll get notified about it. That keeps you up to date even when you’re not right at your computer.

Get the Whole Story

Google real-time also makes it possible to read an entire Twitter conversation about a single topic. Often one Tweet can spark a series of subsequent tweets and retweets. If you were to try to follow this conversation directly from Twitter, you would have to click through each individual tweet to understand how it went. Google gathers everything in one spot so you can easily read through and understand what’s being said all at once.

Top Updates

The new “top updates” feature takes a few of the most relevant or popular tweets and singles them out on the right side of a search index. For example, if you type Obama in to the real time search, you’ll get all kinds of opinions and rants about the president, but on the right side you’ll get relevant news articles and blogs pertaining to him.
