Stanford Indians Beat Ohio State Buckeyes To Win 1971 Rose Bowl Game

The 57th College Rose Bowl game to ever be played occurred on the 1st of January in 1971. This was a men's college football bowl game that was played in Pasadena, California at the Rose Bowl Stadium. This game featured two of the elite teams in the NCAA, the Ohio State Buckeyes (9-0) and the Stanford Indians (8-3). The game was won by the Stanford Indians by a score of 27-17. The game was watched by a total of 103,839 fans from across the country and they were not disappointed. Lastly, the MVP for the game was the QB for Stanford, Jim Plunkett, who was also the Heisman Trophy winner for the 1970 season. The game was announced by Kyle Rote and Curt Gowdy and was broadcasted by the NBC network.
The game started off with Ohio State being the clear favorites because of their record and their stellar play all season. They were quickly surprised when Stanford got on the scoreboard first. The Indians scored a touchdown at about 10 minutes after Brown ran a four yard run into the end zone. Horowitz completed the kick to put the Indians up by 7. About 4 minutes later, Stanford would again advance the ball within striking ...
... distance but were only held to a field goal by Horowitz. It was a 37 yarder that was fairly easy for the accomplished kicker. Ohio would come back at the end of the first quarter and make a drive to end with a one yard run into the end zone by Brockington. The extra point would be completed by Schram and Ohio would go into the second quarter with some momentum.
In the second quarter it would be fairly quiet except for the single touchdown scored by Brockington at 14:24. Schram would get the extra point and the Buckeyes would take the lead. Going into the second half, Ohio would be leading by a score of 14 - 10.
The second half of the game ended up being extremely exciting. The third quarter would be a battle of defenses with neither team being able to advance the ball all the way to the end zone. At about 12 minutes Stanford would get another field goal from Horowitz at 48 yards. The Buckeyes answered soon after that with a field goal of their own from 32 yards out. Schram would complete it with about 8 minutes left on the clock. Both teams would be scoreless again until the fourth quarter.
The final quarter of the 1971 Rose Bowl would belong to Stanford. At 10 minutes Jim Plunkett would advance the ball to the one yard line where Brown would again run it in and the extra point would be completed by Horowitz. Then two minutes later Stanford would score the only passing touchdown of the game when Plunkett completed a 10 yard pass to Vataha which would put Stanford up by 10 points after the extra point by Horowitz. The Buckeyes were not able to answer the rest of the game and the Indians would come away with the win.
