It is strange to think, but the day has come when the power of words can no longer be contrasted with the power of actions. For example, if you sell industrial grade platform scales that can be used across a whole spectrum of applications, it necessarily means that people in different industries will not find you using scale-manufacturing specific terms; they simply don’t know them. A hospital employee looking for heavy duty scales will simply type in “medical scales” or something to that effect. You hope this potentially large account will find you, but if you are not trying to rank for the right term, they won’t.

In addition, many keywords are so general as to be almost useless. You will end up paying a higher price for them on a Google Adwords campaign because they have too broad an appeal to many businesses, and thus have too much competition for them. But this might be precisely what you need to do anyway.

For example, if you sell unlocked cell phones, you may think people are typing in the brand name of specific phones instead of the fact that they are ‘open’ per se. You would be right. Many users don’t even know about ‘unlocked’ cell phones, so you have to spend the right amount of ad dollars to get a decent rate of return on your investment. Conversely, if you have a niche product / service, you might not need to spend so much to rank high on SERPs.
