A skiing trip is an excellent holiday whether it's with family or friends. Skiing is not difficult to master while offering adrenaline thrills at little risk alongside magnificent views - it's easy to see why the sport has grown to be so massively popular. But many of us plan a skiing holiday by packing the kids ski jackets and kids ski pants, and forgetting to bring along the knowledge about where we're going.

The official ski season runs from December to March, and your timing is important to the conditions you'll discover. Should you be taking your break at the beginning of the season, don't forget that the snow can be patchy and conditions may be at times icy, which is not ideal for people just learning. January and February usually are the best months for skiing, especially in Northern Europe, even so it is best to avoid the last two weeks in February as plenty of European school holidays occur at this point.

The main skiing hotspots in Europe are France, Austria and Switzerland. France boasts one of the worlds most well-known ski resorts, Chamonix. Chamonix is wonderfully equipped for a skiing ...
... holiday with excellent transport links across the resorts. And with many of the ski slopes located above 2000m, good, fresh snow is almost always guaranteed. It's popularity however, means that Chamonix is frequently very busy, so you may want to weigh these pros and con's up.

Austria is the second most popular European skiing destination. The Austrian resorts can be at a slight disadvantage to those in France as they are that little bit lower. This shouldn't cause any major problems, but you may decide to check the weather to ensure that the conditions are suitable, particularly at the start or end of the ski season.

If you're a food lover and also a lover of the mountains, Switzerland could well be the skiing destination for you. Besides the skiing facilities the resorts offer, you can delight in a meal at among the best mountain restaurants in the world, surrounded by stunning landscape.

You're also likely to enjoy smaller crowds in Switzerland dues to its misrepresentation as being an expensive destination for a holiday. The simple truth is, lots of the best ski hotels in France are actually more expensive than the Swiss equivalent.

And if you are planning a ski trip with a smaller budget, take a look at Italy, Italy is often much more affordable than many of the other European destinations. General cost of living is often cheaper too, and therefore if you've left buying your kids ski jackets or kids ski pants to the last minute, you'll probably get a better deal in Italy than you would elsewhere.

Should you be thinking of somewhere further a field then the ski resorts on offer in the US or Canada can be well worth considering . This could be a great choice should you be looking to travel a little later that year, because usually the ski season lasts a little longer, even as late as June.

California boasts ‘Mammoth Mountain', and as the name indicates, this mountain is utterly gigantic. It's a massive 11,000 feet and boasts in the region of 3,500 acres of slopes. In Canada you might want to visit ‘Whistler', which is frequently cited among the best skiing destinations worldwide, and was host to this years Olympic winter games.
